My Sennheiser 300D just has an on off switch on the side and when you turn it on a red light briefly flashed to tell you its got power in the battery and then you just plug in the mini jack to the camera and off you go. I've never had nor needed (as far as I'm aware) a remote control

Thanks, I've just tested the mike and another one on my computer and the Senn records nothing so it looks like the faulty cable scenario, it's now out of warranty as I've left it sitting in a drawer for too long. Wondering if a new cable could be soldered on oi if its shorted and blown the whole thing up?

    Very wise advice!!

I know I spent ages researching the best one and ended up with a dud so is there a comparable one, I seem to remember that for some reason which now escapes me it was very important that I got the 300D and not the 300 for a camcorder (something to do with getting a hum otherwise?)

    Any thoughts?

Hi there

It is designed to work with a wide variety of cameras. Are you able to test it on a computer or other non-camera device? Other devices however may have a 3.5mm jack instead of the mini one so I guess you'll need an adapter too.

My only idea is that if it doesn't work on another non-camera device, it may just be a faulty product.

However, before making an expenditures on adapters for testing purposes, I must say this model does have a very sensitive cable. If it is over-stretched only slightly, according to user experience, it stops working.

Have a look at all the 2-star rated reviews on this page for example. They are pointing to a cable fault.

If you feel this is the problem you are having, you might want to consider having it replaced with a working model.

No problem! It does sound like a cable scenario in that case.

I've done some research, and some people have tried to solder a new cable back on. One person's resulted in a loud hissing noise and was then not repairable.

I would simply advise avoiding the hassle or cost and try to have it replaced with another brand or model. If you do find one you like, may I recommend searching for it in and checking out the user reviews to avoid potential problems before purchasing.

On the other hand, you could attempt returning it for replacement anyway, saying it was a gift (so no proof of purchase) and they may accept. Wrong... but it's your call :)

    Best wishes

Hmm, having a look around gets me many more results for the 300 and very few for the 300D. Afraid I can't see any difference between the two I'm afraid.

There are mics that needs to be turned on thru the remote control.

Look for the mic button and press to turn on.

Flashig lights, ticking sound, unfinished cycle

It sounds like it may be a heater problem or motor start problem. If you will post the complete model number from the decal, I may be able to look up something on it.
You should be able to get warranty service even without the proof of purchase as long as the manufacturing date proves it is within the warranty period. The date code is in the serial number.
If you will post it also I can look it up and tell you when it was built.

How do I turn the audio record level off so that I can record an image without sound?

If you don't want sound and have a mini jack cable, you might be able to plug into the mike jack on the side of the camera.
I have an external 2 input audio mixer on my camera. It connects through that input. If I do not have a mike plugged into my mixer and the mixer is plugged in, I will not get audio. You could also maybe try turning your audio levels all the way down.

Audio Issues With Sony DCR-TVR900 NTSC

Well, it is not a bad mike connection since you connected another external mike to unit. If it worked before then something bad has happened to your audio electronics causing this anomaly.

If the internet light is not on that indicates a prob with your ISP, call them up and arrange a service call. I had a similar prob a few weeks ago and they had to replace the drop to the house from the telephone pole.

Mic troubles

Most shotgun mikes are only going to provide a mono output. In some cases there are two internal pick ups and the output would be stereo. A good example of this would be the Audio Technica AT822 which almost looks like two mikes joined together. I have a Sennheiser MKE300 and I modified the plug in order for the signal to be fed to both channels (double mono) I'm not familiar with your Sony mike and I would think that it would feed both channels, either as stereo or double mono, but perhaps it is not designed to do so. And being a hot shoe connection it wouldn't be possible to alter it until the editing stage. However, having said all that, the other problems you describe indicate a faulty mike. The low signal level indicates a lack of power to the mike, which in your case should be provided by the camera (unless there is a place for a battery in the mike, but I doubt it). I don't think it should be tinny either. I have had some issues with my Sennheiser picking up too much camera noise and handling noise but the audio of the subject is quite good. So, if you want a suggestion ... Take the Sony mike back - if you can. Buy a good quality shotgun (not the Sennheiser MKE300!) that has a standard plug on it (XLR or 3.5mm). Buy an external recording device (I use a minidisc and/or an Edirol R-1) This will give you greater control over mike placement and provide redundancy ( I recently recorded a wedding with a broken mike cable -I didn't find out until the editing stage that the camera hadn't recorded usable audio)
