My 1976 Johnson 6hp outboard idles OK,but won't rev up to power under load when I open the throttle. When I checked the spark pluge, I found the top one to be wet with fuel mix, but the bottom one was normal, black and sooty, but dry. Changing plugs didn't help, same situation on the new plugs. I disconnected the top plug wire, but then the motor wouldn't start at all. Is it possible the top plug is firing at low RPMs but not at higher speed? HELP?

High speed jet in carb is blocked disassemble carb remove jets and dip jets and carb assm in carb cleaner ( it comes in a gallon can with a parts tray in the can ) available in most autoparts stores BEWARE remove all Rubber O-rings and gaskets before dipping let set overnite or a couple of hours then blow parts off and reassemble. as far as adjustment screws just turn then in until they stop and count the turns then remove them. When reassembleing just reverse the procedure insert turntil they stop then back them out the number of turns that you wrote down. I had to do this with a 1985 150hp V6 with six carbs and it fixed all my problems as well as a 1976 25hp Johnson. Good Luck

Check for spark against the block. they sell a test kit, i think harbor freight sells one, where you hook it in line and should be able to see if it is firing or not.

After running my johnson 4hp 2s for a couple of hours in the bay it starting giving a strange noise and then cut out.i managed to get it started again but coudnt get above half speed.

Hey Pete.. this sounds serious.... will it rev up while in neutral? If it revs freely and high.. the power head should be ok.. if it will NOT rev up freely and high.. STOP - you are causing more damage..
Check the compression with a good gauge..it should be 125psi minimum.. with no more than 10 psi difference between any two cylinders.. DO this WITH the THROTTLE WIDE OPEN...
Can you turn the propeller by hand while it is in neutral?..Of not.. this is the problem.

My boat motor Johnson 90 hp will not rev up throttle is wide open have checked coils fuel pump new spark plugs. all good boat sank a few years back. before that ran great.it is a 1986 unit

it sank..ooopppsss...sounds like trouble.. First thing I would do is check the compression with a gauge... This will require a GREAT friend.. remove all the spark plugs - makes PULLING the engine over easier.. get a compression gauge (or take it to a competent professional to get the compression checked!). Install the compression gauge... Put the throttle wide open... have your buddy yank with ALL his heart about 6-8 times..it should show about 115psi+ minimum..all 3 cylinders should be with 10+-psi.
If they are not at these specs minimum..you have found the issue..then try putting a little outboard oil into all three cylinders and repeat the test.. if the PSI goes way up.. you have found the issue.

30HP JOHNSON OUTBOARD RUNS FAST ONLY WHEN IT WANTS TO!

is it one coil for each cyl or a double ht ? if single coils swop over and see if problem moves ! if double ht then swop leads over if you unbolt the coil and fit an earth wire to the coil body and try in a dustbin of water ! sometimes the ht are too short to swop ! check connections and earths !

1974 60hp johnson outboard won't run on full throttle under load , max 10%. New fuel and filters ect. The motor is old but has very low hours.

Carbs probably need to be cleaned and re-built. Common problem in outboards that havent been run in a while
