Usually, broken thread means the machine is threaded incorrectly, there is a burr in the thread path, or the tension is too high. It happens often on my machine when the thread slips down the thread spool and wraps around the pin. Hard to see, but it sure puts a crimp in sewing.... Usually, it stitches an inch or so and the top thread gets tight and "ping" it breaks.
Remove the top thread from the machine.
Install a brand new needle.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Set the top tension to the midway point and test the machine.
Adjust the top tension as needed.
Hi Denise.
this is the only link i can find that might help you to find out why.
sew short distance thread breaks Google Search

you need to replace your shukle that holds the tread bobbing below.it is either slack or broken . if it is slack then you tighten the little screw that holds a cover that gives the thread tension .if its broken then replace it.once the thread is slack below it will cause your thread to bundle up.

they are not accurate, but also this machine is not the greatest with all types of thread, try using rayon or polyester thread when trying to wind a bobbin (cotton thread on these machines are typically sometimes hard) let me know and if this does not work ill send over what I have as far as directions

The solution that I found last night was the thread tension. I have never touched the dial, only had it set on 'auto." When I started playing with it, I realized the top thread should be really easy to pull through the machine and it wasn't. I started turning the dial (to 3 or 4) and the thread slid through the machine perfectly. No more birds nest! I really thought it was bobbin initially because of the horrible sound it was making.

Im not sure if this will help but thought I would pass it along. My Pfaff 6122 tells me to check bobbin for thread unrolling clockwise before you place it back in the machine. I had mine turned to un roll counter clockwise, this is wrong, the bobbin will fall out when you pull on the thread while you are holding it in your hand. You may just keep putting it in backwards. Hope this works for you. J.R.
