It is creating waves because there is too much yarn causing the project to ripple. Be sure that you are counting the stitches correctly. Frequently, extra stitches will cause rippling. You need to:
1) mark the beginning of each round with a safety pin so you can accurately count stitches
or in extreme cases:
2) decrease the size of the needle
or
3) use a lighter weight yarn.
Best thing is to crochet a swatch and compare the measurement to what is recommended in your pattern, ie it will say 10 stitches=1 inch, etc. When you get your swatch to match the guideline, then your project will probably lay flat.
