Look for an alphanumeric on the head tube or head badge (where the fork goes through frame) and then Google "Schwinn date codes". It might be worth $200 or more if in prime condition and pre-70's, or much less.

Schwinn bikes made in the last several decades were made at many different overseas factories, and serial numbers varied. Look for a date code on the head tube or badge (where the fork goes through the frame. That is more helpful for date of manufacture. Would be helpful had you told us the model of the bike.

Yes, special tools are required. Suggest you take to local bike shop for correct repairs.

The most secure and sway-free type would be one that bolts to the bike at at least three points, not simply clamping the seatpost.

Blackburn and Topeak make some nice ones. They mostly bolt to those pre-drilled holes above and behind the rear axle and most say what wheel-size bike they will fit plus they have a range of adjustment (usually via bendable metal braces) for reaching that key third point near the top of the seatstays or brake bridge.

What you have is a 1973 Schwinn World Voyageur. Neat bike and was very popular in the middle 70's
