Do you hear other sounds from the phone? If so, check to see what ringtone/notification sound you have selected. Check both in system settings and the settings within the phone and messaging apps. Some notifications are silent. If all these are correct, check an individual's profile that you know has called our messaged and make sure you don't have their notifications silenced. Also, is the phone set to vibrate for incoming calls and messages and, if so, does it?

The notifications area should be under settings.
Other locations: for message notifications for texts, open text app, click the options button, and click settings.
Email settings would be located in the apps you use for your emails. Simply click the options icon once the email app is opened, and then settings.
Other settings should be under the settings app in the phone itself.

I had a similar issue. I powered off phone and removed battery for 1 minute. Restarted phone and made sure both wireless and cellular were connected. Go back to "about device" and check for update. Make sure your phone stays connected to wireless or cellular service while it updates. My phone is not an LG but this worked for me, I hope this helps.
