Question about Plumbing

1 Answer

Hello, I have just changed a swimming pool pump, and the new one does not want to start without a 'kickstart' of spinning the vanes. The old pump had a 'starter'within the electrical connection bow, whereas the new one neither has one, or a space for one. There are six terminals within the connection box in two banks of three, and neither of the two left hand terminals have any connection to them. Would there be such a thing as an external starter, and where does it connect in to? Your help would be much appreciated.

Swimming pool motors

If the pump is turning on/off like that then there is something going on in side the motor.
It does that when the motor over heats.

If AO Smith 1.5 HP pool pump mootor is turning the wrong direction could that be the reason for not priming. If so how do you change the direction of spin?

these motor have been known to do this, you could have the capacitor checked or replaced, it might be a bad motor.. i would look to see that the shaft seal is good (new) and no suction leaks and that the pump has been primed.. if not its time 4 a new shaft seal.. it only takes a short time to burn up the shaft seal

Remove the back of the motor ... you will find there are flats on the shaft. Put your 7/16 or 1/2 open end wrench there and with your other hand, spin off the broken impeller.

Hayward Swimming PoPump is 4 years old - when I opened pool, pump

it you've inspected all the wiring for possible shorts, the most likely problem is that the motor has developed a short in the windings. You may have to replace the motor. First check for loose connections and make sure the wiring going to the pump is good. Also, check the start capacitor, should be under the hump or under the end cover on the motor. If it's bloated or leaking, it's bad.
Most likely the winding have a direct short.
