This is the clutch engaging to brake the drum.

It is not out of the ordinary depending on the size/weight of the load.

Hello that sounds like a broken spider that's blotted to the drum what hold the drum to the bearings if one is broken that will do that the banging is when it pop out on a spin it sounds like a brick hitting the back I would be very carefull as it can try and flip the machine if it catch the drum it's not bearings as you said it stopes and it was ok so it's the spider and most drums are sealed units so you can't do any thing ok hope this has helped you

How do I fix a ge top load washer that's making a loud banging noise while agitating?

There is either a balance issue or a damaged spring. Usually all you need to do is open the washer (make sure it is OFF) wait for it to stop spinning... then look for clothes bunching up on one side. Take some out ad move them around.
Sometimes putting in to many or too few items will make it harder to resolve. Items like large towels or several towels, sheets and such will hold more water and be heavy until the water starts to pull out.

On my spin cycle there is a large banging noise. I thought it was due to the fact that the load was too large or collected in one area of the drum but after doing a much smaller load the problem persists....

Hi,

When my washer did that, I found that the shocks that hold the tub were bad...

Check out this tip I wrote about the noise and vibration that front load washers can make..

Loud banging noise during rinse

Most noises from a washing machine occur during the rinse or spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary. This will solve your problem.

Washer sounds like off balance during spin

old duets have nut on rear pulley that becomes loose. remove rear panel and tighten nut. check while spinning by hand if pop is felt. if it rotates smoothly then you may need new shocks on tub

Banging while spinning

slid the machine out away from the wall and tilt back enough to see underneath. just below the door there is a large concrete weight. chances are it is loose and needs to be tightened. if this problem has been going on for a while the bolts holding the weight on will have snaped and the drum/weight or both will need replacing .
