How to format the hard drive of a laptop without a battery

I was one of the unlucky multitude who ended up with a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop. At this point, I really need to wipe the drive and set it back to where it began. Data has been removed, I have device drivers and I'm all ready to go. The problem is that you can't format the hard drive of a laptop unless it has a battery.

The battery that came with this died in the first year. This machine has always been awful...so slow and difficult. I will not spend money on a new battery. But without it, I can't reformat it.

Is there anything I can do to make this work? Thanks in advance for your help.

When asked if this answer helped, I chose "No." Then I was asked if this was related in any way to my problem and I answered "Yes." Then it said "Thank you, you have rated this as Somewhat Helpful!" Too funny!

I can run the laptop with A/C power. But I cannot restore the laptop without a battery. I boot it from the restore CD and I get a message that says the battery needs to be connected to run the restore. It looks like this is a pretty common problem, but I just wanted to see if someone had a solution for it.

It should run with the bad battery in if AC power is connected. Then just run the restore cd. Good Luck

Hi,

Surprisingly the task of replacing the hard drive is fairly easy, as soon as you have purchased a replacement drive (make sure it's a IDE 2.5ins drive)
Just click on the link that i have provided bellow for instructions on how to remove the hard drive from the laptop and replace it >>>>

Hi,

After you format the drive you need to go to DOS and load DOS with CDROM support, then launch Windows through the command prompt
D:\I836\winnt.exe
the D may be another drive letter, but that should start your install.

Good Luck

Sounds like a bad AC adapter not charging the system. If a known good adapter has the same issue (Or this adapter works on another system) then it is a motherboard replacement

Dell Inspiron B130 wont boot

First remove the battery from the PC! Leave it off for a short period of time! about 2min. This allows the computer to erase anything in temporary memory. Place the battery back onto th PC and try to boot it up. The other thing you can do is boot the pc up with just the power cord in place. See if it boots just from the power cord. Sometime the batteries from dell causes the whole entire PC to become unresponsive.
