Problem with finding contacts on handheld

posted by stellasdad on Nov 23, 2007

I have a BlackBerry Pearl from Verizon. I have lots of contacts. When I open the address book, I see the complete list of contacts, and the prompt "Find:" at the top. When I type a letter (say "P") the contacts list disappears and the words "* No Addresses *" appears underneath the "Find:" prompt. I have plenty of contacts that start with the letter "P". I can't understand why it's not finding them.

As a result I have to simply scroll down through my lengthly list of contacts using the track ball to find any contacts.

I assume there is some setting that is set incorrectly, but I haven't been able to find what it might be.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Thanks very much for the response. I checked the filters and none are on. The problem still exists.

Some more data: When I edit and save a contact, it now gets put at the bottom of the list of contacts. The newly saved contact will also show up under find. Using my example above, if I edit a record for paul, change nothing, but click "save", Paul's record shows up beneath Zornitza's record in the total list. If I click "Find: P" then only Paul's record appears. So essentially there are two A-Z lists. One after the other. The first list is not "findable" the second list is. To get a contact onto the second, findable list, I have to edit the contact and hit save.

It seems to me this must have something to do with way the contacts are imported from Outlook or synced. Any settings I should check? Any way to globally change my contacts so I don't have to go through them one by one and save them?

I suspect you have a Filter "on". If you see a bar right under the "Find:" prompt, that has a name in it, not a contact name, but rather a filter name, then this will be the reason the "P" search is not finding anything because a "P" record doesn't exist in this filter group.

Click on the Menu button (the one immediately to the left of the track ball, scroll and click on the Filter menu item just under the Help menu item. Scroll through your list of filter groups and make sure none of them are "checked". If one ore more are checked, un-check them all and retry your steps from the beginning.

Interesting, being that there cannot be multiple address "books" on the Pearl, let me ask a few questions.

For clarity, the non-searchable list is (A) and the one where new and updated contacts go is (B).

Did you at any time reinstall your Blackberry syncing software on your computer that it might have created a new address book? Did you find that the (B) contacts are sycn'ing to the computer? Do the contacts from (A) sync? Even if updated on the computer and then sync'd?
