Question about Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console

3 Answers

No data error. Won't spin any cd to read it. Get no data Error when trying to get it to work.

Sony ps2 model 7701, will not play any disk, will not spin any disk. Have ensured all band strip connections are firmly in place. Have checked for dust, this seems rediculous as dust enough to stop the disc from spinning would surely be evident, but cleaned the lense any way. seems much more likely that the "internal hard drive", if these things has such a thing is not telling the device to read. I hardly think the drive itself is bad, as the boy only has two games and only got one of them to work, and he hated it. sat with him while i forced hime to spend some time trying it before writing it off. I know the box only has about two hours of use on it. We got it as a gift and have no recipt info so this is this little boxes last horrah!
Any one have a clue for me!?!?!?

Thanks for the info. Not quite like the Cisco systems I am used to. But after several attempts to fix I broke the on off button. I am ready to trash this device and try something new.
    I definately appreciate the info.

    Ok the old one two.
damed if I do and damed if I don't.
I still have the ps2( sitting in the bathroom garbage can alone right now),,, where can I get a new laser eye? power button with the lid shut off switch. I don't think I will find it at the local radio shack?

Wonder if you will address one more time. I was able to resoldeir the reset button. It powers up again and now, and after a very close look and detailed cleaning just to ensure there are no streaks on the lens, I am getting some results. It is now spinning and telling me that I have a dvd, or a ps2 game disc, but still returns no data. I heard that the screws on the back of the lens adjust the output of the data, can this be the issue I am now looking at?

  • mrfixitjb Nov 24, 2007

Hi Mrfixitjb,

I run the Playstation Clinic and we see this all the time with your model of PS2. What we find is the laser lens is melted. This happens when the Console is left on overnight and reading a Cd or DVD and the disc is dirty. The focusing coils heat up from focusing so much and the heat builds up so much that the lens and its mount melt. you can look at the lens with a magnifying glass or Jewelers loupe to see up close. You may be lucky and find the lens is costed with something you can clean off.
Your PS2 does not have a built in Hard drive. You seem to be skilled at electronics so do this, and se if your laser lens is melted and beyond repair. Cleaning the lens with Alcohol will haze the lens over and do the same thing. Replace the laser if needed. new lasers come with a Solder blob to protect against static during shipment. The solder blob needs to be carefuoly removed before installation.
You can click on "Repair Directory" at the bottom of this screen. Then on the next screen click on "Video Game Consoles". Pick a good Playstation Repair shop if you think you need help in getting this repaired.

New stuff is hazardous to your sanity. If you are planning on New XBOX 360, PS3, WII, or others, I must incourage you to get the Extended waranty.. These new systems are breaking into a new era of Graphics. The Graphics processors get really hot ( over 300 deg f) The Manuiafacturers did not see this hapening and put in low grade heat transfer compound to help take the heat away. Well that is where they found out about Silicon Migration. The Heat transfer compound gets hot and stays hot while playing the games. The silicon it is made of begins to move away for cooler living. Well the compound eventually after 6 to 8 months the compound is dried to a dust. No more heat getting transferred from the graphics processor. So the processors run unitl the Heat overload circuit trips them out. That eventually gets to be too late since the heat has no where to go. The processors fail.

    Hi Mrfixitjb,

You can get all the parts you need for your Ps2's at They are great suppliers of parts. Do not worry about Payjunction Payment system, it works great. They use payjunction because it is competition for PayPal and cost over 50% less. Payjunction helps the give better prices. I just bought 5 motherboards and 5 ribbon cables from Mr Terry Gartrell. Best of luck. Hey remember you gotta remove the solder blob from the new lasers. Pull them youngens out the bathroom trash bin, build up your patience, and go for it.

Wow, That is amazing you got it soldered and it worked. That takes a lot of steady handed work. Check your cable from the laser to the motherboard. I got a PS2 slim in today that had a bad spot in the cable giving the same problem you got. The pots on the back adjust the laser voltage. They sometimes help in getting the laser to read. Look at the laser for melted lens or support body melting. This can cause a great deal of problems like yours. If you see melting, there is not reason to stress on adjusting the pots, as it will not help. If no melting is evident and you wish to try adjusting the pots, go for it. Remove the small screws the hold the lasers right rail in place. Two little metal pieces hold the rail. Also two little nylon rests are under each end of the rail. Do not loose these. The nylon pieces can stay in place. You can roll the Laser over on its lens. Then adjust the CD pot first only about 2 or 3 degrees clockwise. The pots are labeled CD and DVD. Only do one at a time. Continue till you get a CD to read. If you have a PS2 game with Blue media, that is the toughest CD to read, and best to use when adjusting the CD format. If you do not have PS2 Blue, then use PS1 Black. You can use a Music CDR if you have neither. Increments of 2 to 3 degrees at a time till you get a little past half way. I rarely see a pot setting over 75% clockwise. Once you have it reading CD's then go do the DVD pot. The PS2 will not read DVDR. A PS2 Silver back Game is toughest to set. Also Silver DVD's. If your fortunate, you will start getting results but choppy. This what gives you the boost to continue your adjustments. You may do 5 to 10 increments before getting results. It takes total patience.

I followed the experts advice in adjusting the volt settings, and it worked!! amazing! turned the pots 1-2 degrees just as described and i'm sitting here right now watching Batman on my ps2 slim! And i was gonna change out the laser, now i might not have to! a friend of mine has a silver ps2 slim and it plays anything you put in it! i dont know why this one is tempermental? its a black ps2. i'm sure there really is no difference but the case is different. i guess it really does matter how that little laser pot is turned up! thanks Mrfixit jb!

When i switch on PS2, loading of a CD takes lot of time, may for half n hour or some. Some times its even not responding for long time. some thing disk error. how to solve this...?

This problem could be one of three things.
1 - Your CD is scratched so badly that the PS2 is unable to read the data on it. To check if this is the problem try the disk on a friends PS2, if this is the problem there are a number of off the shelf CD scratch fixers available.
2 - Your disk motor is broken. Sometimes this happens when the console gets on in the years, its the thing that makes your disk spin. To check if this is the problem note the disks position when you put it in, if it is in the same position after you receive the error and remove it, the problem is with the motor. To fix this you would need to speak with Sony or someone specializing in Consoles to fix or replace it.
3 - Your laser is broken. Again, this sometimes happens as the console gets older, if the problem is not one of the two above it is this. Again you would have to speak to either Sony or a shop that works with consoles to fix or replace it.

Why my ps2 not play games only play video,But Before My Ps2 Play Video And games too, what is my ps2 problum plz help, my emai: thanks

When your console does not read any disk, that is usually because of a problem with the optical laser lens that is dirty, faulty or opaque, and will start operating on certain disks better than others.

In that case you will hear disk spinning, whirring and clicking, but the TOC (table of content track at start of CD/DVD will not be read, therefore the error.

Whe this problem is starting you may be able to read only few CD, DVD. After more prolonged usage , often the PS start losing the rest of functions, and ends up not reading anything at all.

If instead there is no noise, and disk does not spin at all , then there is a faulty motor, or the motor micro-switch is bad. This situation is far less common than the lens problem.

Try first using a CD/DVD cleaner disk to clean the lens. If that does not work you will need to disassemble the PS, and clean lens directly with q tips and isopropyl alcohol, or to replace the CD/DVD lens, or the whole drive unit.

before doing tis, contact Sony to check if the unit can be replaced or repaired by Sony, you find the number on the Console documentation.

Sounds as though the drive may be failing. If the unit spins and whirs a lot when loading disks, it will most likely need replacing
