Question about Carrier XHB123D X/Y Series Heat/Cool Air Conditioner
Having a problem with a weather maker 8000. It will not come on at all unless I shut down the switch on the side of the furnace. filters is clean. it will start to light then stop
. Several times of recyling power normally brings the furnance up. Though the failure code has always been 31, there are several different behaviour when the blower starts after reset :
a. blower simply creases.
b. there is an attempt to start the heating unit (I hear the high pitch noises), then everything stops.
c. there is an attempt to start the heating unit (I hear the high pitch noises), once I see the orange glow from the coil, normally the gas is lit up and the unit starts working.

This happened to our wder maker 8000
the ignition sensor/ thermoresistor is broken get it serviced
this turning on and off is because the system checks if the gas is lit using the sensor, if it does not detect fir it will shut off to prevent explosion

Sand down the sensor, then it will work.

This is what happened to my WeatherMaker 8000 furnace.
I first hear a heat pump motor runs and gas lit through burner for a few seconds then shut off repeatly a few times. I also measure PL2 wires connect to Igniter which its' position on the second right burner counting from the right side when you face to furnace. Before gas lit into burner, the voltage is about 12 VAC until gas valve open to let gas into the burner then I measure at the PL2 wires which connect from PL2 to Igniter turned into 120VAC. Meaning that there is a power runs up to Igniter but Igniter does not have a connect , power was cutting off, then gas valve closed. I unscrewed the igniter and find out the the element from igniter broken. buy a igniter from dealer for the cost of 35 dollar plus my labour while I call for an service with the price of 300 plus. so far i am getting my furnace back working again. for this reason, i did research some things new about the flame sensor but i can not say i will be right for this. in case of the you can see a igniter turns light on, gas lit into burner and there is still problem of shutting off , then there could be possible a flame sensor malfunction. you can sand slightly off the carbon around the flame sensor. I think the flame sensor is picking up temperature and tells the cpu that so far there is a heat, then let cpu will let gas lit continuely into burner. it may possible that if there is a high heat exists, and flame sensor will tell the cpu shut off the gas valve and stops supply any more heat. if you are at this situation, you will smell a strong burn smell from the paint of the furnance, and it also tells me that the motor is now malfunction.

On this unit a code 31 usually is a high pressure switch or relay not closing. Use the diagram on the unit. Find pressure switch. There is a button in the center of the switch press it to reset. Also check the ignition module and flame sensor for burn out.

I think the running on power up is just a test mode for a service person.
