Question about HP Pavilion ze5170 Notebook

1 Answer

When booting all that comes up is "operating systems failure"

I recently was given a laptop(hp Pavilion ze5170) with no battery, a spliced adaptor cord and two, I'm not exactly sure what they are called, but, one is for wirerless access and the other is for home and office, they are to be plugged in underneath the laptop. I've tried booting with-out each and with each card. All that comes up after the hp logo is a black screen with a small blinking dash mark near top left of screen or is says "Operating System failure". I don't know much about computers and have no money right now so I must work with what I get. Does anyone know what I can do?

If you have an os disk or restore disk you can put that in and at the HP logo hit F12 that will take you to the boot menu choose boot from cd and then when prompted choose repair

Ze5170 not showing usb flash as boot option

1. The PC has to support booting from a USB flash/pen/key drive. There may be anywhere from 0-3 items to change in the BIOS to make this possible assuming your BIOS supports it. Some older bios's may refer to your flash drive as a USB floppy or USB zip.
2. The USB flash drive must support booting from it in general.
3. The flash drive must contain the boot/system files.
4. The flash drive must have bootsector area. This is done with special utilities.
5. References to "A:" drive lines in the autoexec.bat and/or config.sys files you copy to the drive after you make it bootable may result in errors.
6. There are several programs available if you do a Google search that will help you make your USB Flash Drive bootable as well.

I have a hp pavilion ze5170 laptop and it is shutting itself off for no apparent reason. anyone know what could be causing this? it doesnt appear to be software related. its not crashing just turning off.

Power drain would be a better solution in this case.
1.first shut down the comp
2.unplug the charger
3. remove the battery
and after press and hold the power button for 60 seconds without any charger and the battery. After the 60 seconds replug the battery and the charger and turn the computer

HP website says what to look for

"HP has identified a hardware issue with certain HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 and Compaq Presario V3000/V6000 series notebook PCs, and has also released a new BIOS for these notebook PCs, version F.39 for dv2000/V3000, and version F.3D for dv6000/dv9000/V6000."

Good luck..

Help,please keep answer simple.

Clicking noises coming from a computer is generally a bad hard drive and must be replaced.

*However* the power going off may mean it is a fan that is bad and needs to be replaced.

Either way the laptop will require a replacement part, so take it to a computer repair shop and will be able to determine which it is fairly quickly.
