Question about Refrigerators

Warm refrigerator compartment lead to shocking freezer problem!

My refrigerator compartment has not been cooling properly while the freezer stays frozen. Common problem from what I've been reading. So I go to see if the coil in the freezer has a defrosting problem. Indeed it did. It was frosted up pretty good. That's not the surprise. What freaked me out is that the molded plastic all around the coil appears as if it has melted or burned away! I can see yellow insulation all around where the plastic used to be. There is no evidence of the plastic cracking and falling apart. It's just as if maybe it reacted chemically with something and evaporated! If I could attach a picture I would. What on Earth has happened to this Maytag product? Am I at risk of greater problems the longer I use it?

Thanks for the needed info. But what has caused the disappearance of the plastic?? Are there toxic plastic chemicals floating around the refrigerator now? I might be able to epoxy some new pieces of plastic over the gaping open areas, but will it happen again?

  • coaterengine Jul 29, 2009

Thanks again for the info, but I still don't know why the molded plastic that makes up the lining of the freezer has disappeared around the coil. It couldn't have burned or melted by heat, because we would have smelled it and there would be visual evidence of it having burned. It's as if it has chemically evaporated, which is why I'm concerned toxins are released into the air in the refrigerator. Does anyone know why this plastic has broken down like that?

This sounds like the heater is shorted or the terminator is not good. I would probably replace both parts. As for the plastic I dont know if that needs replacing. You would have to look at that. There is 3 parts with the defrost system. The other part would be a defrost timer. You could replace that just to be sure. But I would definitly replace the heater and terminator.

as long as the parts are repaired it shouldnt happen. Sometime a part just breaksdown and nobody can predict that. I wouldnt be worried about anythng toxic in refrigerators. Any questions on that I would advise that you call the manufacture for the ms report

    Thanks

My RJ 523V-R refrigerator has worked perfectly for 8 years, but suddenly stopped cooling the fridge properly while the freezer seems ok. how can I fix this?

Often times their is a fan from the freezer section to the refrigerator section, of some brands of boxes. If the fan goes out, the refrigerator sections no longer cools.

Have a kenmore refrigerator freezer works but not refrigerator

You mean "How to Fix a Kenmore Refrigerator That Is Not Cold But the Freezer Is Good?"

Well this what i say,
Kenmore combination refrigerator and freezers combine the short- and long-term food storage options in a single unit. There are some occasions when the refrigerator compartment might appear to be malfunctioning while the freezer box stays cool. Ruling out these occasions ensures you have done everything you can to correct the problem before calling for a technician if necessary.

1.Verify that the temperature controls for the refrigerator compartment are properly configured. Tap the "^" or "v" buttons beside the refrigerator's LCD temperature display until "38," the ideal temperature, appears. The compartment could have been set too warm. Allow 24 hours for the the appliance to reach 38 degrees Fahrenheit.

2 Check that the refrigerator compartment door closes completely, objects inside the appliance could be holding the door ajar. When cool air is allowed to escape, the internal temperature rises. Cracked, holed or corroded door seals may also raise the refrigerator temperature.

3 Change how you use the refrigerator compartment; storing hot or warm food strains the appliance and causes a rise in internal temperatures. Do not prop open the door or leave it ajar for more than a few seconds at a time for the reasons outlined in Step 2.

4 Contact Kenmore if the refrigerator compartment remains too warm for your food. There may be a problem with the motor or any one of the other parts that regulate the temperature

If this was helpfu.l please let me know.

It is a top freezer (double door) brand new (one month) WHIRLPOOL 410 litres refrigerator. Both the compartments are not cooling anymore. What can be the reasons? I hope it is not the refrigerant leakage...

Its possible that its refrigerant leak issue.Because both sections not cooling, this indicates low refrigerant problem.Because when refrigerant gets low the compressor gets weak and cause no or low cooling in both fridge and freezer section. The other possibility can be any of the fridge or freezer door not getting closed properly, if this is the case then it will let warm air inside and this never lets the refrigerator to get properly cool. ------- Click this link for more help and further troubleshooting:--

Freezer is blowing and staying around 20 degrees and refrig is warm?

If you mean the rest of the refrigerator is warm, that means the fan that circulates the cool air from the cooling coils around the freezer compartment is broken, you'll need to send it in for repair.

Bottom of fridge not cooling

The fresh food compartment is cooled by air being blown from the freezer compartment into the fresh food compartment. Something is restricting that air flow which causes your fresh food compartment to stay warm.

There is a panel, or door if you will, that separates the freezer and fresh food compartments. The freezer temp control determines how much cold air is allowed to escape into the fresh food compartment by opening or closing this panel.

If the panel is restricted from moving (stuck closed, for example), the freezer will get VERY cold while the fresh food compartment will be warm.

Try thoroughly defrosting the refrigerator. Possibly an accumulation of ice is preventing the panel from moving and/or is restricting air flow from the freezer to the fresh food compartment. It's a free fix and may solve your problem altogether.

If that doesn't help, or helps only temporarily, you may have a problem with panel itself or the linkage that connects it to the control mechanism. Unless you're skilled in appliance repair, checking and repairing these components will require the help of a service technician

Hope this was helpful. Good Luck.

Kenmore elite 596 73503201 no cooling in top compartment

if the freezer is getting cold the problem is due to the cold air from the freezer not getting into the refrigerator. There are several things that can cause this problem. The coils in the freezer icing up and not defrosting properly is one of the things that can cause the refrigerator not to get cold enough. Another problem is the fan that blows the cold air from the freezer compartment into the refrigerator, not working. When the compressor is running open the refrigerator's door and push the switch that makes the light go out. You should hear the fan blowing the cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator, when this switch is pushed in. If the fan is working then you will need to find what is blocking the air flow. Iced up coils are a common problem. The icing problem can be due to a defective defrost timer or something defective in the defrost circuit. Click here for more information. Check for these problems and let me know what you have found.
