Itunes should be upgraded because they are changing and updating the software so that it runs the best that it can.

As for the version of the software on your ipod, you should have the latest version of the free software on there. If you want to purchase the new versions, it adds new functionality too your ipod, but it is not required.

Can I upgrade my iPod to ios6.0 as I keep getting a message saying upgrade to this but don't no how

iOS 6 is possible only on iPod touch 4th generation and newer
- There are two ways to update the iOS version of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch - via connecting the device to iTunes on a computer
- or directly from within the device, but only since iOS 5, it is possible to update the iOS version without the need to connect the iOS device to a computer (over-the-air update)
just go to: settings - general - software update

Upgrade from ios4.2.1 to iOS7. Use only as iPod touch.

I don't understand what your question is. If you do not have service through any of the phone carriers you are already nothing more than an ipod. If you are wanting to upgrad to ios7 you need to connect to a computer that has itunes installed. Once itunes recognizes your phone it will notify you that you need to upgrade and give you options.

My new Panasonic SC-HC57 is showing a 'checking connection' message when I put in my ipod Classic into the dock. I've upgraded my ipod to the newest software through iTunes, but still no

Not all ipod classic work with your SC-HC57 you need an older Panasonic SC-HC30 to work with that ipod :( or an iphone or ipod touch to work with your SC-HC57

Trying to restore 80 gb ipod, keep getting error 1439

You upgraded to the new itunes and thats would be your downfall.  Uninstall itunes and go back to the itunes version that worked.  Don't upgrade just because that stupid icon tells you to.  If things are working, then don't fix it or in your case don't upgrade.
Also, try plugging your ipod into a different USB port on your computer.

ITunes freezes after 8.1 upgrade on Vista PC

Apple has made it harder and harder to use our ipods over the last upgrade especially.
I am running itune 8 on vista home basic and I have the same problem.
But since I repair ipods i put numerous ipods on this system and it doesn;t work that great with any of them.
although I have found one solution that really has helped with alot of connection issues and ipod crashing in vista. I installed a usb 2.0 card in my computer and only use it for my ipod cable and it has helped.
Most of the iPods and iPhones only will connect with a 2.o usb port anymore.
So if you have a usb 2.0 use it, if you need drivers get them and reinstall them in your computer to get the fast usb connection. it is still slow in itunes but it's much better.

as for iTunes 8 and why it crashes, well it is an apple product. the don;t care about the ipod, it's a throw away product for them. They want you to buy a new one. But in this day and age, they should give us a break and start making the products so they are user friendly. Thats why Mac has never really exploded. They are too expensive and they don;t support their products. Even the Geniuses at the genius bars in Apple store done know **** about their own products, they just give refubished ****.

Good luck and sorry for the Rant!!!
