My computer will not recognize the drive. I hear

My computer will not recognize the drive. I hear the typical sound when I turn it on, but after a few minutes, the hard drive makes a consistent noise and my computer never reads the drive.

Sorry nothing to do your harddrive is dead. you might be able to open the case and replace the harddrive with a new one. Try searching google or youtube on how to do that.

Can you hear the drive spinning when you connect it to your computer? A spinning sound means your external drive is being powered by the USB from your computer - there are several reasons the drive is not being recognized.
If you are not hearing any spinning sound the drive could be damaged.
Does the drive get recognized by any another computer? If yes - check disk management and see if security is enabled on the drive. Also - check to see if there is a drive letter assigned to your external hard drive.

My hard drive isn't being recognized by my computer. I've retried on different computers but it remains invisible. It sounds like the drive is spinning when I listen to it.

Hello

OK, if you by any chance can hear a clicking sound when the drive is turned on you might want to have a look at the ink below.

Hard drive clicks several times when turned on,

I have to say from the sounds you describe the Hard Drive is totally destroyed, the noises you can hear are the mechanical parts inside grinding and clanking together. If the information is critical it may be recovered by a specialist data recovery company, but we are talking £100's even £1000's to do the job, so otherwise I would suggest taking case apart and buying a new hard drive for it.

Sorry its not what you want to hear but it sounds very terminal to me.

The reason the PC can detect a device is that it can see the Interface card that sits between the USB port and the Hard Drive.

Its in your logic board controller issue, usually the problem is like that but to see what is the another problem of your External Drive is to make or use any diagnostic freeware program to identify the device where it really connected in your PC. I have also encountered like your problem but I send my External to Electronic Tech to check the power connection and controller connection going to PC. Because you said that the hard Drive is still have a normal sound then it is working then but cannot see in your Computer. Try to Diagnose first before you bring to a Technician. Good luck!

Your hard drive is toast. If the computer doesn't recognize the hard drive and/or you hear a constant turning sound then your drive is broken and can't be repaired. You'll have to have it replaced.

Aren't you glad you backed up everything?

USB Ports don't recognize typical thumb drive, mass storage devices

I'm not completely sure, but this may be a result of faulty drivers.
Try googling the brand name and the word: "Driver"; along with any other details about the device. (Model No. et cetera.)
