The solution to this problem was the Relay RY6001 replacement. I was able to find a suitable part from CPC check out:-
http://cpc.farnell.com/schrack-components/rtb74005/relay-pcb-spco-5vdc/dp/SW02588
for the details. The part fitted Ok when one of the pins is cut off. You do not need this pin so it is OK.
I have a full set of fix it photos if anyone needs them. It took about 40 mins to strip, replace and re-biuld the TV - there are loads of screws to get at the PCB and then you have to put them all back!!
Thanks again to mgnut for all the info.

I have had my WS-65511 fail like this, first at 4 years, second 2 weeks later, then 3rd time yesterday (4/14/2009). In past, the tech replaced a thermal sensor p/n 299P313010A (but Mitsubishi says that part is not for WS-65511 and that it does not have a thermal sensor - go figure). It is a white rectangle with about 30 pins in 2 rows and is soldered onto a board in the TV. List price is about $25. Might be your problem.

Most likely this is caused by a defective main board. Changing the main board will fix the issue about 95% of the time.
To be absolutely sure, the voltages need to be checked on the power supply. If they are not the values listed in the service manual, then you should replace the power supply instead (accounts for the other 5% of the time).

Problems relating to the automatic turn on and turn off of a set like this usually point to the main board being an issue. For this set, I believe Sony refers to that board as the "AU" board.
It's probably not the G/Power Supply board, especially if it turns itself on. Power supplies will turn a set off, but rarely--rarely--turn itself on.
If there's no kind of extended warranty involved here,
you could be looking at $500.00 for parts and labor to repair this kind of problem.
As always, try any software/firmware updates Sony might have available on their website prior to pursuing a repair visit.
