If you say it is trying to run but is not or spinning slow, you may need to check the capacitor. If you have a meter that measures micro farads, just check the rating of the capacitor and see if it is good. If you don't have a meter, just replace it, it should be about 3-5 dollars. It is a small silver oval cylinder usually secured near the motor. It has two terminals on top and two or three wires going to it. When you replace it, both terminals are the same, just make sure the wires that were together go back together. If this does not work and the motor is still spinning slower than it has before, you may need a new motor. Let me know how you make out or if you need help finding some parts. www.grainger.com will have what you need.

Air Conditioners Cooling Tips

  • Whole-house fans help cool your home by pulling cool air through the house and exhausting warm air through the attic.
  • Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible in the summer. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
  • Avoid setting your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and, therefore, unnecessary expense.
  • Consider using an interior fan in conjunction with your window air conditioner to spread the cooled air more effectively through your home without greatly increasing your power use.
  • Avoid placing lamps or TV sets near your air-conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
  • Plant trees or shrubs to shade air conditioning units but not to block the airflow. Place your room air conditioner on the north side of the house. A unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10% less electricity than the same one operating in the sun.

I have an amana 90 home air conditioner w/ a amana prestige compressor. compessor runs but cooling fan not turning ,fan is not locked up and unit has power .of course w/fan not turning home is not...

Could be a couple of reasons for this:
    1. Condensor fan motor bad.
    2. Condensor fan motor loss of power.
    3. Condensor fan motor capictor bad.

Unit has control for fan for low ambient operation and unit is low on freon telling fan its cold out side and dont run.
    Hope this helps. wally

I've had my air conditioner for a few years now and it no longer cools anything. The fan works, the condenser(?) turns on when I set it to cool instead of fan, but the air coming out of it isn't...

You need to determine if the compressor is running, if it is and you have no cooling then you either have lost charge or bad compressor, these units re not worth replacement compressor

    Thermo set "heat" and "Auto

Check the fan relay. These relays are used to cut the fan on and off when the thermostat is set in the air conditioning or heating mode or when you move the thermostat to the "Fan On" position. The low voltage usually the green thermostat wire is wired to terminal #1. The low voltage common wire to terminal #3. One line voltage wire is attached to terminal #4. The high speed blower wire usually black is attached to terminal #2. When the thermostat calls for air conditioning or "Fan On" the 24 volt coil is energized, the terminals 4 and 2 close. This causes the fan to come on in high speed. When your home cools down and the thermostat cuts the air conditioner off, the low voltage coil terminals 1 & 3 are denergized, and the fan goes off. Sometimes these little relays stick which causes the fan to run all the time or will not make good contact, which causes the fan to not run in the "Fan On" or air conditioning mode.

My Home Ac Unit Is Not Blowing Any Air

This sounds like the fan not turning during cool. You will have to check the fan relay for power during the cool cycle. The fan relay is run by the low voltage side, but still there is hi voltage present. When in heat the power goes thru the relay on one set of points then in cool goes thru the opposite side. You should have a digram present, and then on the main circuit board there is a code light. Check the light for blinking or (flash) read the bottom of the board for the code ( very small print)

Air conditioner fan will not come on and unit will run for 1 minute and stop

You hear the compressor kick in (Hum) but no fan comes on? Will the fan come on when just in fan mode, not cool, or do you have that set-up?
