My iphone wont charge

I had this exact problem too - same as the first two posts anyway.

It seems to be just a software issue and was easily resolved for me with a full power off and reboot. Here is how to do that safely.

Plug in the phone using the wall socket charger, leave it for a few hours to get a charge (i know it doesn't look like its charging). Later, press the on/off button. The battery icon appears with just a thin red line. Let it go back to black. Then press the the on/off button and the menu button simultaneously for about 8 seconds. A red button should appear on the screen with a question asking if you want to power off the phone. Say yes. (I think it was a slide bar, but can't remember now.) Wait a few secs while the phone powers off. Then remove the power plug from the phone. Now reinsert the power plug. After a few (worrying) seconds of nothing, a white Apple logo appears in the middle of the screen, a few more seconds and the iphone main menu appears. No data has been lost, no settings are altered, and best of all, the battery shows a full charge and seems to be back to normal again.

hi the way to restore it if when you plug it in to computer is as follows,
turn of phone fully by pressing and holding both power and select buttons until phone completely turns off , about 8 seconds, right now open itunes on your computer, now push and hold select button (round one with square symbol on it on front of phone) whilst holding this button plug in snc cable , i tunes will grab phone and make it visible ni itunes (this takes approx 6 seconds) now you can release select button and continue to restore iphone in itunes, hope this helps some of you.

Turn on iTunes, plug in usb cable, now hold in top and home buttons till screen goes blank. Plug in cable to phone and pc, leave top button go, but keep finger on home button, iTunes will open phonem now follow prompts for recovery, mine said it wouldnt recover, but it works fine! Please note, I have already contacted my wireless network and have a replacement 3gs on its way, I suggest you do the same!

The hard boot worked for me! This was driving me crazy. But now I have a full charge. Thank you!! You saved me a two hour trip to the Apple Store!

If itunes won't recognize the phone, try what I did when I had that problem: Go to apple's website, download itunes (even if you already have it AND it's up to date), and install itunes....don't know why it worked for me...but it did. It has worked for many others too from what I've seen on the interweb.

If you live in Canada , U.S or some country where is Post office offer CASH ON DELIVERY service , i'll take it off your hand and pay for your phone .
I need it for part... Impossible to fix it ,main board burnt . Apple can't fix it if you still have warranty and they will send you a brand new one....

thanks. the reset kept taking me to the white apple logo... then it would go back to the thin red line battery logo... downloaded latest i tunes while my phone was connected by usb... and on it came like nothing every happened.... worst 1 hours of the week just ended!!!!!

my phone will almost reset to factory settings then it says it was restored but just goes back to the red battery and lightning bolt. what do i do???

Ok people, I Had the exact same problem, read every post I could find till my eyes bled... But what I did, and by no means was it magical, I'll see if you can solve it as we go....but first people suggested.... push the right buttons, in the right sequence, try the USB and reboot computer,some with the iphone on ,off,unhooked, hooked up.. try a wall outlet, try a car charger ect... some worked some didnt, I started thinking.. then some guy even said he took the phone apart, took the battery out, charged the battery and put it back in and it worked...now that would be fun after a night out ...Right there it dawned on me..Dont get me wrong, I tried all those suggestions with the exception of the opening of the iphone, looking on the ground for that little screw that went flying..method... what dawned on me was, that...very simply, that dust/lint/dirt gathering catchall opening on the bottom of the iphone could stand a little crud removal... after all, we all blew into our sega/nintendo games to insure a good connection when it froze up...sooo, I cleaned my iphone, and heard that magical iphone chirp...I also removed a pound of dust (I need a maid)... from the ihome I use...it prob wasnt always charging cleanly and fully, and perhaps when it runs down to "dead" that the draw needed from a computer charge may be too much for a USB ? or it freezes. and needs a good jolt...so those are my 2 cents, more like 50... good luck .. remember, there is a chance of an internal issue...or dead battery, but usually you'll get a few signs days/weeks before, this iphone just stopped accepting a charge an hour ago.....till now....

This seems to be a common problem, but thanks to a post on another forum it's solved. Phew.
Plug your iPhone into your computer with a USB cable. Reboot the computer. Give it a mo'. Voila. It's a nasty scary flaky bug but happily easily fixed.
