Its no high speed USB connection but its all about your hardware capable of burning some CD & DVDs, this problem is occur when you have use external DVD Drive, because I have the same problem like yours, usually like that. All you have to do is keep use on internal DVD Writer. Good luck!

The ASUS sdre-08d1s-u is not burning cds. Common problems? fixes?

I have the exact same unit, and after about 100 burns the little guy gave out on me. If it isn't burning, I would recommend going into your device manager on your computer and checking to see if your USB hub is functioning properly. In that doesn't work, or you don't find any issues, try plugging it into a different machine to check and see if your computer is the one at fault. Often, the motor itself is the damaged unit, rather than the internal workings, so the computer says it's working fine, and lo and behold, the drive won't work. If that doesn't work out for you, then unfortunately it sounds like you're out of luck, and it would be cheaper to just purchase a new one.

I need the fuckin driver or software or whatever for the sdrw 08d1s-u external burner thing. my comput3er will not pick it up!

Don't bother. Asus externals **** ****. I had 4 of them. After so many hundreds of burns, the laser or the motor drive starts to choke and makes coasters - but worst of all - takes 10 effin minutes to load a cd. Took them to the 17th floor of my office and whipped them as far as I could. They fly pretty good.

The drive plays DVDs and can read doc files, but

This problem is normal and exists with many CD/DVD drives.
On some of the drives, if you put in blank discs and try to open the disc in My Computer or Windows Explorer, Windows displays no contents or a blank disc. Whereas on other drives, you get the error message that you mentioned about incorrect function.

What software are you using to burn CDs or DVDs? Are you able to burn CDs but not DVDs or you can't burn both the discs? Did you try a CDs with a different make/manufacturer? Some drives refuse on some disc makes. Try another disc and another writing speed, or try the lowest writing speed available with your software.

Hope that helps,
Regards,
Raspal

If it is a USB device, it will be compatible with Windows 7.
Plug it in, and let Windows "detect new hardware".

I have just bought an Asus SRD - 08d1 for my wife's laptop and have no idea how to use it. I presume it needs NERO to work

Depends what you want to do with it and what the OS is.

If Windows XP, you can burn to CD using OS but DVD needs Nero or similar to burn. Further, you will need DVD display software such as http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-DVD-Player-Software.htm to watch DVDs.

I think Vista works native (untested) but Windows 7 has basic funtionality built right in.
