Question about Solis Crema SL-90 Espresso Machine

1 Answer

No matter what the shot size is, only a tablespoon of espresso comes through each time. Same if you run it with just water running through. You can put the buttons to the largest amount and it still only puts out the same amount of water/espresso each time, only about a tablespoon. Everything else is working just fine.

not sure what you mean, I have a cup under it, even if I am just running straight water through the portafilter. If I put it on 6, even with just water running through it still only puts out a small amount of water after the pre-shot water that runs through.

No, the water isn't going anywhere else. Not leaking anywhere or anything. Is there something in the front panel wiring or boards that controls the amount of water per shot, and the settings for the different cup amounts? I was thinking maybe something went out there.
BTW, I bought this machine (solis crema sl90) in 1998 or 1999. I have never had a problem with it up until now, I thought maybe that was why something may have finally gone out in the electronics panel that controls the shot sizes. Thank you for your time.

Yes the, flowmeter, which controls the volume could be damaged, you might be able to get one from Barratza which is the solis importer.

Do you sell coffee scoops?

Just use a regular tablespoon to measure coffee.
I usually use one tablespoon per 6 ounces water.
Because I like my coffee a little stronger, I
usually add one extra for the pot, no matter
how many cups I make. Works for me.

Descaling rancilio

Use Citric Acid.

  1. Dissolve about one tablespoon of citric acid in the water reservoir.
  2. Fill the boiler completely. Open the steam valve and start a hot water cycle until water comes out the steam vent. Stop the hot water cycle, close the vent.
  3. Let the boiler heat up about 5 minutes. Then turn off the power.
  4. Let the acid solution work for about 1/2 hour.
  5. Pull a 30 second shot to change the water in the boiler.
  6. Repeat flushing cycles (steps 3, 4, & 5) until the water looks clear. Refill the reservoir with water and acid as needed.
  7. Wash out the water reservoir.
  8. Pull 5 or shots to get the acidic water out of the boiler. Run a hot water cycle to clean the acidic water out of the steam vent.
  9. Let the unit come to temperature and look for leaks.
  10. Make some coffee and look for leaks.
  11. Froth some milk and look for leaks.

Very watery espresso

you probably need to give the unit time to heat back up between making coffees to reach correct pressure that will affect flow rate and so will different blend use grind size and oilyness acidity will vary between roasts and that can affect what the end results will be

My 12 Cup grind and brew coffee maker needs a good cleaning. How do I do it?

To clean the inside of the coffee maker, fill the reservoir with water as you would to prepare coffee, except add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to the reservoir. Place a clean filter in the basket and run the solution through. When it is complete turn off the unit and let it cool for 2 minutes and then pour the hot solution back into the reservoir for a second run, you can reuse the filter that you placed in it the first time. After it is finished this second time, turn off the unit for 2 minutes and pour the used solution down they kitchen sink. Allow the carafe to cool for a couple of minutes and fill with cold water and run it through as you did the solution, but put a clean filter in this time. Repeat this one more time to remove the vinegar solution and discard the used filters. Once the carafe is cooled fill it about 1/3 full of water, add several ice cubes and 1 tablespoon of baking soda swirl this around in the carafe for a minute or so. Rinse the carafe and run it and the basket through a cycle in the dishwasher or wash by hand with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and you're done. Good luck.

What is the difference between espresso and coffee?

All espresso is coffee, but not all coffee is espresso. Espresso is a term used to describe a way of preparing coffee.
Coffee is a drink made from the roasted seeds of a Coffea plant. Espresso is made by pushing a shot of hot water at high pressure through very finely ground coffee

I get lots of watered down coffee. It brews 3/4 cup but it is so watered down. We have descaled etc. I want a thick expresso like taste. This is on a large cup setting Help?>

HI
When you run a lot of water through just a little coffee it gets water down. Try making 2 meduim cups instead. When they make espresso its 1 tablespoon to 1 oz of water. Your running 6 oz of water through the same amount of coffee, and its going to be weak. Program you buttons for 2 shots to fill your cup and it will be pretty strong.

When running the machine for a shot of espresso I get water leaking into it. It's a Rancilio Silvia, this occurs with every shot. All I've done is clean the machine.

Time for a new group head gasket and probably all the recommended preventative maintenance.

It's blinking de-scale side water holder gets r4eally hot water is not coming out properlywhen u press one of the cup size bottons

Hi,

This is the time, you need to Descale the machine. The simple procedure is :-

Unfortunately, in spite of the best-laid plans of mice and men, espresso machines often get clogged by scale, deposits of minerals from hard water. Scale can cause serious damage if untreated. If your espresso machine's water flow has decreased a lot, it's probably because of scale. Fortunately, there is an easy and inexpensive way to descale your espresso machine.

  1. Obtain some citric acid. You can either order this online or find it in the kosher foods section of the supermarket (usually marketed as "sour salt"). Acid solutions dissolve scale, which is made of calcium carbonate. There are special solutions marketed specifically for descaling, but citric acid works just as well and is much cheaper.
  2. Prepare the descaling solution by mixing citric acid with water (I use two tablespoons of acid and a quart of water).
  3. Put the descaling solution in the water tank, turn on the machine, and run water through the steam wand until the cup is filled, to expose the parts to the solution. Turn off the machine, and leave it for 20 minutes so that the solution has time to dissolve scale.
  4. After 20 minutes, run more water
  5. Run solution through the machine every 20 minutes, until the water tank is empty.
  6. Fill the water tank with plain water, and run water through the machine until output water no longer tastes sour. This is important, because excess citric acid does not make coffee taste good.
Let me know, if need further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

1 Answer

Shots too watery

1, Check the grind on the grinder. Imagine grounds as rocks and sand, if you are using rocks then the water will run too fast and with sand it will run too slow.
2, If using an automatic machine(water volumes are pre-measured), check to make sure that you are getting the correct volume(3ozs fro a 2ozs shot, and 4ozs for a 3ozs shot), an once of water stays in the coffee during extraction.
3, Adjust the tamp(packing pressure) of the coffee, fill the portafilter with coffee a little over the top, then level it out and tamp to the fill ring on the inside of the basket.
