Question about Singer 14SH654

Needle hits the bobbin spindle and makes a "clonking" noise

I just bought a used singer stylist from a local sewing shop and it worked great until it started hitting the bobbin spindle and it broke one of the needles. And so I replaced the needle, same exact kind... and it continues with the clonking... This must be a timing problem? Can I fix this myself or do I have to go back to the sewing shop?

It sounds like the timing is out. are you confident the needle is fully inserted into the needle holder? if so take it back to the shop or look here for instructions on repair for stylist machines. http://www.tandtrepair.com/StylistLine.html

Why does it make a knocking noise as it sews?

the needle position is up tight in the holder and no where else
the cut away bit of the needle faces the bobbin case hook and the groove in the needle faces the end of the machine and gives clearance for the thread to pass through the material
from your description and what you did, the needle /hook timing needs adjusting as it is out
turn the machine over by hand as in sewing and watch the position of the eye of the needle and the bobbin case hook
just as the needle starts to move up, the hook should be just above the eye of the needle at the edge of the needle
The adjustment is by loosing off the screw on the vertical shaft at the end of the machine that is attached to an arm that moves the needle up and down and move that bit up or down until the needle is positioned correctly to the hook
tighten up the screw
next is to check the needle tension is not too tight
workshop manuals are available on line in pdf version or take it to a sewing machine repair shop for a proper diagnosis

Needle hitting bottom of bobbin area

Get a new needle first and try that. If that doesn't work, you're timing is likely fouled up and it needs a quick trip to the shop. (Seriously, that takes about 5 minutes to fix so depending on how busy the shop is you might be less than an minutes.) Also, don't let them recommend a bunch of other services. If you were so inclined and have a screwdriver handy, google "fix sewing machine timing" and you can tinker with it yourself but it's no guarantee.

Singer 2263 needle hitting something in bobbin area (loud thunk) and needle moves

try taking the bobbin out and putting it back in the bobbin
case if it's a top loading bobbin
if it's a side or front loading bobbin make sure the bobbin case is
inserted correctly
if the bobbin and bobbin case are inserted correctly then
it sounds like the sewing machine could have a timing
problem and needs to be checked at a sewing machine shop

My Singer 6160's needle is hitting the bobbin plate.

first change the needle--flat side to the back of the machine, make sure the needle is inserted all the way up into the needle holder
make sure it's the correct needle for the machine
if the needle keeps hitting the bobbin plate then the machine may be out of time & would have to be take to a sewing machine shop for retiming.

I hit a pin with my Singer Stylist 7258. It jammed. I changed the needle, rethreaded it, and turned it off and on, but it snarls up thread under the fabric, and seems that the thread does not always loop...

Good that you changed the needle. Did you rethread just the needle or did you rethread the machine? You may have already taken these steps, but if not, here is what I would suggest:

1. Replace the old needle (which you did), even if it looks ok, as it may be bent or have a tiny burr or other damage that isn't easily visible. Make sure the needle is seated properly - facing forward and fully inserted.
2. **Completely rethread the machine, making sure the thread is going through the take-up lever. It can easily pop out when the machine jams, and you can't always see that the thread is out of place. That could explain why the thread doesn't loop properly around the bobbin.
3. Remove the bobbin and clean any knotted thread or lint from around the bobbin carrier. Canned air is great for cleaning the lint.
4. Replace the bobbin, making sure the thread-end is clipped neat, not frayed or knotted.
5. Try sewing on some practice fabric to make sure the stitches are going to form properly before returning to your sewing project.
Good luck!

Thread's bunch-up lower fabric

Make sure your bobbin is in proper and secure, it should click when you put it in. Also try putting a new needle in. Clanking noises are sometimes a bent needle.
