Re: My PS2 tells me "this disk can't be read".
HI.This will occur when the optical assembly becomes unstable. this ((Whole One Piece)), assembly incorporates the spin/load motor, optics housing /arm, tracking device and tracking rail and both lens. This is housed in the loading dock assembly(Drive). This 'NO Disc' or CD NOT PLAYABLE, code is the result of a failed or burned out lens. It is possible that you have a dirty lens cap. you can try using a cleaning disk in this case to confirm actual lens failure. if the cleaning doesn't restore normal reading capabilities, this will confirm my diagnosis.
You will need to have the optical assembly replaced in this case. once replaced, your unit will be able to read and track once more.

If you have the first Sony Playstation 2 it will be the disk reader it will have dust in the disk reader that was coming through the disk tray' i had the same prob but i fixed it by buying a new console $195. But if it was the first Playstation Slimline i think it still might be dust or if has got dropped before that would've stuffed it up a little or maybe the game has scratchs on it and it won't load up because you might have accidentally scratched the start of the game or it could be corrupted game or console but then again it will say if the game is corrupted and to but in a Playstation 2 game or a DVD-ROM.Those are the only things i can think of, Hope one of these helped you but if not go to EB games or GAME to get it cleaned out or taken a look at. Thanks for reading
This happend to my son last night. He could not get any games to work. You ned to get a can of air the stuff you would use for the key boards for you computer to clean. Open the tray of the ps2 and spray air in there. There is dirt on the laser that reads the disk. If that does not work you need to open it to repair it. I have a link if you need to do that if this does not work. The caned air fixed my sons though it is 7 years old. If this does not work you need to open it to repair it. I have a link that will explain how to fix if you need just ask on here with this post Good Luck
That clicking noise you are hearing is the laser trying to read the disk. There are a few reasons why this is not happening. Either your laser is dirty and needs to be cleaned, or your laser is damaged and can no longer read the games.
I strongly recommend cleaning your laser and making sure your games are clean as well. Keep your ps2 in a ventalated area.
If this does not work, you may have to have your ps2 repaired. If it is not covered by your warranty, you will probably save money in buying a new system. It will most likely cost more to get it repaired.
I hope this was able to fixya problem and Happy Gaming!
When the disk starts up there is a section of data that tells the ps2 that it is an original ps2 disk. Your ps2 is not recognizing the code. You will probably need to replace the system or take it to a professional.
Ok, it seems like your disk tray has been knocked out of alignment, or the motor has gone bad. If it just needs to be aligned, then it is an easy fix if you are willing to open up the ps2. Just search for ps2 repair guide on google or a search engine of your choice and you should not have any problem finding a guide that will walk you through all the steps, I would tell you myself but I am at work but I wish you luck.
Check your disk for scratches fingerprints ect,, if thats all good step two try useing a lens cleaner
****(( tip and trick for scratched disks ))**** a crayon rubbed on the disk then wiped off with a lint free cloth no t-shirts dish towels that will just add more scratches remember start at the center wipeing out to the edge.
When you installing PS2 HardDrive with Network adapter you'll need HD
Loader Disc (you can find it with a bit of googling) to execute game although elf applications from the
harddrive. but if the laser lens of your ps2 can't reading a disc you will need installing a modchips such as infinity. Modchip like this will launching BOOT.elf on memory card during boot of PS2. see here http://e-arena.blogspot.com/2007/04/boot-up-ps2-hdd-via-memory-card.html for giude. hopefully this helps.
