When i put a disc in my ps3 the green light flashes for a few seconds and the bluray drive makes noise for a little bit. But after that, there is nothing, there is no green light, just the red light indicating power on the right side. It does not read any kind of disc, and i was wondering if there was any way to fix it without replacing the bluray drive-if thats my problem

Re: ps3 does not read discs
HI, this is an optics failuer code. this will usually happen in units of this nature due to high levels of usage. the optical assembly will become unstable at times in this case, allowing the alignment to shift and cuase spin motor failuers. the lens assembly will burn out as well. all of these componets are housed within the drive. It is nessecery to replace the entire drive when a major failre occurs as is in this situation here.
You can also just replace the optical assmebly as well, althouhg this is nto recommended when the is misalaignded(noise when trying to play the disk)
i recommed replacing the Drive. this will fix thsi issue.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

This is a bad drive. I'd replace it immediately before trying anymore disks lest it damage the disks. Usually this occurs when there is a read error. It is also possible there is a disk stuck in the drive, jammed inside, the sensors, sensing the second disk automatically ejects the one you put in. Either way remove the drive and replace it with a PS3 replacement drive. (Note a way to test if it's a bad bluray lense is to stick a DVD in the drive. If it accepts the DVD and plays, then it can only read the DVDs and not the blu ray disks. If this is the case you've blown the blu ray laser, it still needs to be replaced.) If all else fails take it to a tech place and have them diagnose the problem.

looks like they took the drive apart when a disc was inserted and put the drive back together in disc in mode
there are 2 little white pedals that pop up when its in "disc in" mode the only way to fix it is to take the drive apart and manually move it to "disc ejected" mode
to do that, when the drive is apart you have to take of the little peice with the cd guide wheels then open the wheels and you will see a gap in the middle of where the little metal bars open up and the little white pedals fit through then just hit eject and they should lower now. put the drive back together and test it b4 you put the whole system back together.
you can try to clean the laser and see if you are lucky enough to have that fix it. but usually it means your laser is shot and needs replaced. the laser is pretty pricey but it is pretty simple to replace.
I have the same problem. My PS3 stopped reading any bluray discs. The spinning circle in the top right corner will come on for a few seconds when a disc is inserted, but then nothing. I found a work-around to get it to read discs though. You have to have a bluray disc in the drive (game or movie) and start a downloaded game or Playstation Home. Once the game or Home loads, hit the PS button on the controller. The crossbar menu will pull up and you will notice the disc icon will (magically) pop up. Click the quit game icon. Once you are out of the downloaded game or Home the disc icon will still be there. You can then load the game or disc. The icon will remain there until you eject the disc, so you will have to repeat this every time you want to load a game. Although this is a workaround to prevent Sony from gouging you for $150+, this is still not a fix. A fix would be for Sony to admit they have a money making firmware problem and fix it. This fix will only work if you don't have an actual hardware failure (which I apparently don't). I think a class action lawsuit is in order for everyone that has this problem and especially for those who have shelled out the money to fix something that is firmware related. I'm sure Sony will only fix the firmware to make this workaround not work anymore so as not to lose their little cash flow scheme.
