My Sony camcorder DCR-TRV740 has an error code that comes up. I was told by a camera repair person that the problem is the battery on the memory board. How do I get to this battery to replace it?

When I answered you before, I was going on memory. Since then, I got the error code to come up, and it is C31:40. Does this make a difference?

I'm sorry, but no go on this. More info. Everything seems to work without a cassette in the carriage. The carriage opens up and closes as it should. But when a cassette is in the carriage, it will not close, and when the cover is closed as far as it will go, against the carriage, this is when the error code shows up.

Will someone please answer my first question. That battery is not going to last forever, even if the problem is not the battery now.

The error code is C:31:40. The cassette carriage will not close with a cassette in it. It works fine without the cassette.

You are the first one to mention a power reset. This camera does not have a "button" to press and hold. It simply has a Power select lever that selects the different functions when not in the "Off/charge" position.

I did try holding the system 'reset' button in. But still no solution to the problem.

No the camera is not under warrenty, and I fully believe that I am quite capable of changing a battery and while observing ESD practices to protect the circuity since I just retired from working as an Elect. Tech for 45 yrs.

You will have to full dismantle the cam-corder, by removing all the screws. You will then have to find the batty pack and most likely have to use a soldering iron to remove it. After you have received your replacement, then reverse procedure.
You can purchase the part at any of these sites:

What does the error say?

If you are referring to the battery on the memory board, it is advisable to take your camcorder in the nearest authorized service center by Sony as this can be sensitive to do-it-yourself.

If the camera is still under warranty, then the better.

    Thank you.

This may sound strange, but the problem is not with the battery, but rather there is a component inside which is getting warm. As it is very sensitive to temperature, many people with error C31:42 for the Sony DCR-TRV740 have had success getting the unit to work by simply cooling it using a hairdryer.

In most cases this always fixes the problem. I know it sounds crazy and completely unrelated, but what you need is a hairdryer which can blow warm and cold air. Please try the following:

    1. Open the video tape area

    2. Remove any tapes

    3. Use a hairdryer to blow warm air into the empty video tape compartment for about 20 seconds

    4. Now, switch the hairdryer to blow cool air into the same compartment for a further 30 seconds

Try using the camera now (you may need to turn it off and on). In most cases it will fix the problem (as weird as it sounds!).

    Best regards

This has to be one of the strangest solutions I have ever dealt with! The the error you provided previously is fixed using the hairdryer method. The error you've just provided (C31:40) is actually fixed (and I know its another crazy one) by doing the following:

    1. Turn on the camera

    2. Remove the tape but leave the tape carriage open (ejected)

    3. When you get the error, give the camera 4 firm thumps on the base of the device with the bottom of your hand

    4. Place the tape back in and close the carriage

    5. It should work

Just to be clear I am not being funny with these solutions (that would be unprofessional!). They are the weirdest I have come across yet but it should fix the issue. If it doesn't, please try the above method again, but this time turn off the camera when you get the error, and then hit the base with your hand 4 times firmly and turn it on again. Did it work?

I would be very interested to hear how you get on.

    Best regards

Video camera displaying Error code C:31:23

I have been fighting the same problem. I just now picked up the camera and a small rubber roller fell out of the tape door area. I was not sure where it came from but looking closer there are 4 small rods sticking up on the right side inside the area where the tape is located. It looked like this was where the roller went so I placed it on the center rod and replaced the tape. This solved the problem and I am now able to view and recored as before. There most likely is a part that has either fell or broken off or is loose inside the tape area.

Error code sony dcr trv25 c:31:23

Sony says the unit needs a power reset (error 31). Unplug the camera, remove the battery and wait several minutes before re-attaching the battery and/or AC cable. Then power the camera back up. The 23 code says you need to use a InfoLithium battery-- apparently these are smart batteries that give data back to the camera. These error codes seem to be quite common however, and so a hardware issue may be the case. Some users have said that removing the battery while the camera is powered on will clear the codes. Others advocate "smacking" the camera, I would not however, recommend this. is a good place to look for more information.
