Can't hook up mouse and keyboard

My parents who don't live in the area and are computer beginners just got an emachine desktop. They read the directions and tried to set it up but can't seem to hook up the mouse or keyboard to the computer. It's a round plug with prongs for both. I told them to not force it but to keep turning it until it went in. They have been doing so for 2 days with no luck. They called tech support who pretty much said the same thing I did and then reccomended hiring someone to set it up. we are trying to avoid them having to pay someone. I'm starting to think maybe the parts are defective...but what are the odds of 2 parts being broken?

Any other suggestions of what can tell them to do?

Most keyboard and mouse connections have a notch in the top of the connector. this connector usually faces 90 degrees to the right. if that doesn't work then it's definately defective. i suggest going to frys or best buy and getting a USB compatible mouse and keyboard. those are less confusing.

Okay, setting up the mouse and keyboard is very simple. The mouse should have a green end, and the keyboard has a purple end. They fit into the corresponding places in the back of the computer. Also both the mouse and the keyboard have flat sides. Try attaching them in the four different directions (e.g; up, down left, right). If that still doesn't work have them look at the wires to confirm that the wires are not bent, that could explain the problem, because the twisting could have caused bends in the PS2 Connector.

I was holding down enter and accidentally locked my keyboard. When I try typing in Microsoft Word a message at the bottom says the keyboard is locked. How do I unlock my keyboard?

Try holding down RIGHT shift for ~8 seconds and watch for a pop-up menu.

If that doesn't work, refer to this: http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/computers-beginners/accidentally-locked-keyboard-363705.html

Can I use a mouse and keyboard with a USB port?

Hi,

Yes, you can use a USB mouse and keyboard. Just plug those devices at the back of your computer. Restart the computer if the devices do not respond.

Thank you for choosing FixYa!

I turn on my computer and although the mouse and the keyboard are connected they won't work. I am sure the mouse and the keyboard are fine. There is something wrong with the desktop.

Base from the description of your problem it seems that your computer is having some issue in recognizing your mouse and keyboard.

So what you can do here first is to power off the computer manually by pressing the power button until it shut down, then once its OFF unplug and replug your mouse and keyboard from the computer then power it back ON and check if its fine now.

The T4010 emachine does not recognize the keyboard, but does recognize the mouse, is the answer a new motherboard?

If replacing the keyboard (try a USB keyboard, instead of a PS/2 keyboard) does not help, and the old keyboard _does_ work when connected to some other computer, then a new motherboard is the next logical step.

Emachine come up where it ask for me to hit f10 or f2 but it wont do anything. My keyboard or the mouse wont work. My emachine is a w3050. Looking for a diagram of how to hook hardrive cd and just to see...

Are you using a wireless mouse or keyboard? If so try using one that you plug in. As for the cd rom and hard drive all you need is one cable for each device hooked to seperate connectors on the motherboard. Ususally the hard drive will be sata which is a red cable and can only go onto one connector on the motherboard. the cdrom is an ide cable(grey usually) and there is a seperate connector for that on the mainboard.

HI,
Go into the BIOS utility and set the BIOS to defaults, hit F10, save the changes and exit the BIOS, the computer will restart, see if that helps.

To get into the BIOS hit the Esc or Del key when the computers just starting up.

Good luck.

If it uses the PS2 type mouse and keyboard connectors, there exists a very real possibility that you have the connectors reversed.
