Because of a few factors like dirt buildup, leaking connection or a blockage can be a factor, I will give you the online manual that guides you through entire hookup and assembly. It is possible to overlook a simple connection or a blockage. You can test for a blockage by removing the tank coupler and running compressed air through it and may unblock it the same way. Just make sure that the line is open on the other end as well. Do not use too much pressure because you can damage valves this way. I would recommend reading this manual first and in case you have already, going over all connection for leaks (use a little dish soap and water over each connection). Silly as it sounds, make sure the tank is full as well. The manual explains too about all possibilities of no flame. Good luck

No pilot light, been standing unused for some time.

You may well have to purge the gas line as there will be air in there , as the pilot injector is very small it would take ages for the air to come out .

Will not fire up!

If the pilot comes on but goes out straight away then replacing the thermcouple should sort out the problem. If not pilot you may need to run a gas leakage test, see patio heater problem solving on how to do a leakage test. There are some very helpful guides from a specialist patio heater company.

The pilot seems to light but then when I turn the knob to ignite the main burner, the pilot goes out. Is there a technique to clean the igniting assembly?

let the pilot light burn for a few min and get hot after this try slowly moving the knob over to full burn. Sometimes it just need to heat up.

Once I get the pilot light lit , hold for 30 seconds, and the let the knob out to turn to low or high, the pilot light won't stay lit.

From what you're describing, either the Thermocouple needs cleaning or it needs replacing, However, these are not easy units to work on for a Do it your-selfer. so I would recommend taking it in to a pro who can get the part if necessary and replace it if necessary. Most independent hearth stores that sell and service gas logs and gas fireplaces can help you.

Heater will light but then flame out after about 30 seconds - any trouble shooting tips?

Normally the first consumable part to fail is a thermcouple, this will cause the pilot to go out when lighting. Start by checking for any leaks first and if OK change the thermocouple, if still a problem try shorting out the tilt switch.

Pilot assembly parts or thermocouples

Hardware store thermocouples don't work on patio heaters. The fittings are not the same thread and they are not set up for the anti tilt safety switch. You'll need to purchase the parts from Blue Rhino.
