GE PS123 MGNA CC Ice Auger

The plastic ice auger in this GE model fractures every 12-15 months. Since taking ownership, I've replaced this auger assembly twice and the bucket/auger assembly once. The design is no feat of engineering mastery.

Is there a stainless steel alternative to the OEM plastic?

This side by side refrigerator is from 2003 and 2 times now I have had to replace the auger/ice bucket assembly. The 1st time a piece of plastic broke off the auger and got pushed forward into the where it gets dispensed. It literally got wedged in there but ice was still falling. Over time the metal mechanism at the end where the ice falls was creating a groove in the piece that was wedged in. As I went to get ice it would run over that piece and deposit fiberlike pieces of plastic in my drink that the naked eye could barely see. I was coughing for over 2 weeks not knowing what was going on. my wife told me to go to the Dr but I could tell it was not from me being sick. I finally figured out it was only when I was getting ice out of the fridge that it happend later on. I then proceeded to check the ice bucket and lo and behold there it was wedged in there. I called the company and after complaining that this was a very serious safety issue, they offered to send me a new one. Well this happend again just last week but luckily I caught the problem in time. I called GE about this same problem and again they offered me a new assembly unit. Got it today and it is the exact same one, no difference at all. It is only a matter of time b4 someone is seriously injured and who knows, my stomach may have some issued from this after all.

I just finished replacing the ice auger in my GE HSS25GFPA side-by-side and offer some suggestions/hints.
The auger (WR17X11705) was available locally (Appliance Parts Co., $28.97). This fits many other refrigerators. The replacement took a little under 2 hours. I estimate these hints may cut the time by one-half.
There are only 4 screws in the entire ice drawer assembly. It possibly was not necessary to remove the control rod. The other 3 screws hold the front cover. There are also 2 tabs holding the top of the cover.
The most difficult part of the repair was removal of the plastic assembly housing the crusher blades and the front bearing of the auger. This is held in place by only 2 large square tabs on the sides. There is enough space to get ONE side to release BUT to get both released required careful prying with thin-bladed screwdrivers (and prayer). These "tabs" don't push in, rather the drawer flexes out. Once released, the unit slides up and angles to allow removal of the auger/crusher. Re-assembly could not be easier. Stainless sheet metal screws would probably work if you do break something.
Remove the clear inside cover of the crusher assembly and the "C" clip on the threaded end of the auger shaft to separate the auger from the crusher.
And now for my PRIMARY reason for sharing my experience - the %#$@ plastic nut/bearing is a LEFT-HAND THREAD. I only realized this when trying to bend my make-shift split screwdrive back and the SOB loosened right up!
Carefully note the locations and orientations of the blades and spacers as you move them from the old to the new auger.
Good luck!

Unfortunately there is no alternative to that plastic auger. I have replaced several, but not that frequently. Is the ice maker leaking (not likely---GE has a good design but anythings possible)?? Are the temperatures fluctuating making some ice melt then refreeze?? I would consider abnormal use or some other issue as to why it keeps breaking.

I am having the exact same issue -- how did you get the auger to slip back inside the drive gear? I've been trying & trying, and my hand hurts yet no progress. Thanks.

GE refrigerator model GSS22 WGMD ice maker motor

If you cant manually turn your auger motor, it may be bad. Does it dispense solid ice or no ice at all? Another thing may be your control panel. That could be bad too, it's the one sending juice to both your solenoid and auger motor.

Ice dispenser auger does not work.

Hi, On GE refrigerators the motor is not quiet. Open your freezer, remove the ice bin, press the door switch, make sure it turns off the light, and then press the ice dispenser lever. The solenoid will click, which also opens the ice door and the auger motor will turn on and you can definitely hear it. If the motor runs then inspect the auger connection on the rear of the ice bin, its plastic and they break. On some models, like my GE Adora there is a switch just for the ice maker behind the ice bin. If you need more help let me know as with all long distance troubleshooting we try with the information we have. Thanks and Good Luck!

GE GSS25LGM Ice maker not dispensing ice

You have one of three things wrong. The auger motor is frozen up, the ice bucket is broken or you need to dump out any ice, run warm water through the entire ice bucket, dry it out and try again with fresh cubes. My guess is the auger motor is frozen. You can buy a vinyl boot that covers the auger motor to prevent moisture buildup and freezing from GE Parts at 1-800-626-2002

Ice maker will not dispense ice.

ON THE AUGER MOTOR IS A COUPLER THAT SLIDES INTO THE AUGER WHEN THE BIN IS INSTALLED. SOMETIMES, THE COUPLER WILL ROUND OUT THE FLAT SIDE OF THE CENTER HOLE. THIS WILL CAUSE THE MOTOR TO CONTINUE TO TURN, BUT THE COUPLER WILL REMAIN STILL DUE TO THE RESISTANCE OF THE BIN AUGER. ALSO, BE SURE THE ICE IN THE BIN HASN'T MELTED TOGETHER BINDING UP THE AUGER. IF NECESSARY, REMOVE THE ICE AND START OVER WITH FRESH ICE. YOU MAY NEED TO REPLCAE THE COUPLER OR AUGER MOTOR.

Ice Dispenser not working on PSS26SGPA Stainless Side by Side

This is a common problem with this GE and "lookalike" models. The dispensers first break the front plastic drum that holds to the auger and eventually cracks the rear circular sleeve as well. Pieces from the drum usually fall off and are even dispensed with ice ... eventually the drum is damaged enough that the auger no longer operates. The motors on these units, however, continue to operate.

You can receive the replacement parts needed to make the ice maker auger operate again by visiting the GE parts website. A usual repair will run $40-60. Unfortunately, the design of the replacement drum has not changed, so be prepared for this to happen again.

Best of Luck.
