I think you answered your own question when you type "it was dropped in water" go to google and type in your remote part number and get a new one. there are probably several different site that carry that remote. like this one

you need to open up your remote. dust off any particle for the board. clean up the edges for any accumulated dust. lastly check the rubber for any signs of crack.

Anonymous, It is the remote hand set which goes bad. Please have the hand set checked for defective crystal oscillator, old batteries, and failed IR LED. There may be some internal damage due to falling also.
