Hi!
It sounds like the lens unit is damaged. You should contact your local Sony service center. If they ask too much, you can contact me toms.safranovs@gmail.com - I work in a Sony service center and repair these every day.

If this camera takes ordinary batteries you may have inserted them the wrong way around.
If it takes a rechargeable pack recharge it for average time recommended and try again.

When powering up my cyber-shot N50, the lens extends and retracts several times, then a message appears, "Turn the power off and on again" I can download to laptop, took battery out, charged up and put...

Hi,

The exact steps can be provided with the correct model #. The model # starts with "D". Error: TURN THE POWER OFF AND ON AGAIN is displayed on the LCD screen when the Lens Mechanism is stuck or when affected by any malfunction. If turning the power on and off again does not resolve the error message, try doing a power reset and Initialize option.

Performing a manual power reset

Turn off the camera.

Remove the battery pack.

Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.

Allow the camera to remain without power for 60 seconds.

Reinsert the battery pack.

Turn on the camera.

To reset the Camera back to factory default, select the INITIALIZE Option from the SET UP1 Menu of the Camera to OK. This will set the user defined settings back to factory default. The images and videos will not get deleted.

If the issue persists, service may be required.

Thanks,

Cannon G7 need help

Hi
Had the same problem a few months ago. There was a high pitchedwhisltle and I think the screen said "lens fault.turn off camera" or something similar.Bought a G9 to replace as the 7 was out of guarantee but sent the 9 back to the e-bay reseller as it was obviously secondhand with grit around the lens ring and the viewfinder.Ebay never again!.So 3 months ago ago I tried the G7 again with a fresh charged battery before I consigned the camera to the loft.I noticed that each time i switched on the whistle and message was there but the lens extended slightly further each timeso I kept rebooting until the lens was fully extended.Turned the camera off and on again and everything was back to normal. It seems that this may be Canons protocol when a camera goes back. Its been absolutely fine until today. It wont boot up at all.I have tried 2 fresh charged batteries and its dead.Any ideas anyone?

I have a sony cybershot DSC-P200 an while using it at the weekend it just froze on me the shutter closed half way and wont go any further it was fully charged and charged again when i got home and still it...

Hey pauline04,
There are a couple of reasons you would be told to turn the camera off and then back on. I would first make sure the battery is fully charged, and if it is not I would charge it. The most common reason for this message is something is obstructing the movement of the lens (i.e. sand), which can sometimes be fixed by blowing compressed air into the side of the lens in hopes to dislodge what is stuck in the lens. If neither of these options works you could try a manual reset of the camera by pressing the reset button inside the memory card compartment with a pointed object, and then turn the power on. If this works it will reset the camera to the factory specifications. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan

Lens is stuck so Camera does not turn on

The battery packs in these units dont have a very long "shelf life" meaning when you charge the battery you need to use it within a few days or it will loose charge. Have you tried a fresh charged battery? They are very power hungry devices and the more advanced they get the more power they need. How old is this unit? how many charges have you put on the pack? it may be time for a second pack. An emergency backup pack good power is key nowdays.
