Question about Abit IC7-G MaxII Advance Motherboard

1 Answer

Abit IC7-G MaxII hard hang issues evolved into unbootable.

Abit IC7-G MaxII This motherboard has had issues for a few months now. It started with a hi-lo siren which I fixed after cleaning off the CPU and putting on new thermal grease, attaching the heatsink. (only to find it was the little northbridge fan that failed and was causing it to sound). Then I had intermittent hard hang crashes without bsod's. I bought an 850w corsair pwr supply and that helped reduce them. Still they are totally random. I ran low lvl chkdsk on hard drive and memtest all was fine. Used hardware monitors and tests. It ran fine under stress but then 20min later hard hung while opening a web browser. I checked and the latest BIOS is installed. I have not ever overclocked the 3.2E GHz processor. Now it has finally decided to stop booting into the OS completely. It bluescreened then rebooted before ever making it past the windows vista loading screen. The bluescreen is too fast to read. I tried another hard drive and a clean install of windows vista but the same thing happens. It won't work in Safemode either. However I can get into the BIOS. I have not tried clearing the CMOS or taking out the battery. HELP!!!!!!

I have 6gb of corsair xms ddr400, amazon sent me an extra pack. i kept the extra just in case one pair went bad. I set the timings in the BIOS according to the recommendations, that neither helped or harmed. I just rechecked to make sure I have the proper pairs in their slots.
I *think* I may have found a solution but only testing will tell. Hardware is a nasty bunch to troubleshoot sometimes. On a whim I installed Win7 32bit and it is running again without a hard hang thus far. In the past I've gone as long as a week without one so time will tell. I am suspecting a low level driver was an issue and 32bit vista wouldn't repair. A fresh install should have fixed the issue but it didn't. I used driver cleaner to thoroughly remove them... I dunno. The second hard drive I tried out was 64bit vista *gulp* derrr the 3.2E processor doesn't support it. That is why it was fouling up. Thx for the suggestion. My first thoughts were memory or power supply since it is a hard hang without bsod.

Try changing the position of the ram, remove one and switch it between slots. check you have the right type, it can always be overlooked and im sure ur not a dummy if you ran all those tests.

Hello gphillips397!
Abit has released an updated BIOS for the IC7-MAX3 motherboard which fixes quite a few issues with your motherboard including one that can cause the system to hang with certain memory modules. The updated BIOS is HERE and instructions for the upgrade are in Appendix G of the User Manual or a general guide is HERE

How do I reset bios on this motherboard? I've tried to find a user manual to download without success.

This link to Abit will get you the manual for the IC7-MAX3 board, which may what you need.

If by resetting BIOS you mean clearing CMOS, just remove the battery.

Hi,
If you can locate the chipset on the mainboard for the sound card.
then download driver from other manufacturer ..
You will see for eg Intel ac97 or realtek audio something like that..
For your mainboard configuration it may be
Realtek Audio driver

OK

Sounds like you have an issue with your PCI bus. Easiest fix is to buy a new motherboard. For a socket 478, hands down the best motherboard you can get is the IC7 from abit. I had a P4E prescott on an IC7 and it was faster than anything until the core2 duos came out. Abit only uses solid gold capacitors and Ive never heard of a bad review of them. They have an IC7-G which gives faster LAN speeds but if your only on DSL or Cable you won't notice the difference. Of course there are other models out there, the only thing I will tell you is to stay away from the VIA chipsets for the 478 sockets. They had a bunch of issues and will corrupt your data.

Here is a link to an IC7 motherboard for sale.

Were do i get audio and video drivers for 1bit- ic7 motherboard

Try http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=IC7&fMTYPE=Socket%20478&pPRODINFO=Driver
However the IC7 does not have an integrated Vidoe card so you will need to go to the manufacture of the AGP card for this

Need driver for motherboard

Abit.com/Support, and the main page for the Abit
IC7-Max3 motherboard,

http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=IC7-MAX3&fMTYPE=Socket+478

Drivers page,
http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=IC7-MAX3&fMTYPE=Socket%20478&pPRODINFO=Driver

Look down the list. Look at the fifth one down.
-> Intel Pro 100/Pro 1000 LAN Driver.
The version is 11.2
I suggest this one.
You click on the blue -> ASIA, or Europe, or US, to download the driver file. (I usually use ASIA when downloading. Seems to be a better connection, coming from close to the main factory)

Download it to your computer. If you don't have your downloads set to save to your My Documents folder, (Start>My Documents), this will go to your desktop screen.

I can't tell you at present if it's a Zip file, or an execute file. (.exe)
You will see -> .zip at the end of the file name, if it's a zip file. If it is, double-click on it. You should unzip it, before you copy and burn it to a CD disk, and then install it into your wife's computer.
