Question about Car Audio & Video

1 Answer

I have a Ford stereo on a car which is 8 years old. Whilst using the car radio last week, the reception for the station went off. I tried another preset station; that was also off. I used the search to find another or any station and nothing would work on FM or AM. The CD player works fine, but I have not been able to listen to the radio since. The aerial is attached and the clock on the radio is working via the RDS signal.

Hi

If you are sure that the aerial is attached and there is no break anywhere in the antenna connection then you should know that there is a common fault with tuners on these units.

The Ford 6000 unit in particular (and you don't say if this is your model or not) is extremely prone to this. What happens is that the tuner module in the unit itself fails causing intermittent or permanent loss of reception. This happens to practically all of these units at anytime after around 6 years or so.

The tuner units can be repaired for around $60 but the unit will have to go for service repair as it involves unsoldering the module from the circuit board and replacing it with a new one.

One method fully diagnose this as a tuner issue and to absolutely ensure there is not a problem with the antenna on the car itself is to purchase a cheap antenna - remove the unit from the dash and plug the cheap antenna into the back. You do not need to attach the antenna to the car body for this purpose as it is purely for testing puposes. If there continues to be no radio reception then the problem clearly lies within the tuner module in the radio itself.

Hope this helps and remember to rate my answer. Many Thanks

Yes. In fact, it probably is. At TSS Radio, we have seen a lot of SP5's with an antenna connection issue. This is a problem our repair guy is able to fix.

Dual xhd6425 Reception Problems

My XHD6425 seems to be very inconsistent... Sometimes I get okay reception, other times I get terrible reception (much worse than my original stock Ford radio). The reception problems are more noticeable on stations that are more than 30 miles away or so.
Perhaps oddest of all, I've sometimes had it bounce back and forth between two stations (like if you are driving and in the middle of nowhere, half way between two stations), even in areas where I know should be getting good reception on one station and had never heard of the other other station before.
If you've figured anything out, please let me know.

Possible solution. I have fixed two with this problem. When the radio drops to a hard surface, the ferrite coil antenna is the heaviest component on circuit board. Look for cracks in solder or broken wires where attachments to circuit board occurs for this component. Use a fine point soldering iron with low heat.

SL100 static and bad FM reception

I have noticed various changes in my invehicle FM reception as well. There should be a external antenna that came with your car kit. This is precisely for these types of issues. It is designed to run along the windshield inside the car closest to the Cars radio antenna. It should plugin to the bottom of the cradle. Then tune it into a clean FM station (one that has no local station on it) and position the cradle and/or ext. antenna till you get the best reception in your vehicle. It could very well be that the antenna has come has loose on your car stereo backplane. You would probably notice decreased reception on regular AM/FM stations as well though.
Your wifi reception/functionality is a completely different animal and has no bearing on the FM transmitter in the car cradle. When your on wifi your not receiving signal from a sat. anymore just simply streaming internet audio like your computer.
Good luck.
