Look on the Microsoft website and download the lastest update to a Storage Media device. It maybe that the data you downloaded from your Xbox360 is corrupt.

SOURCE: 360 dashboard error problem

This error is in the same GENRE of RROD.. which is... well fatal.... although there are claimed fixes for this on youtube and the interenet the truth is they are temporary at best. I hate to say this but the best thing to do is to send this to Microsoft to be serviced.

Sorry.

E 71 error code

Nobody is 100% sure what causes this error but it Most likely relates to dashboard and console updates. Also, the problem appears to arise from gamers incorrectly flashing their hardware or doing botched firmware hacks which then prevent the system from functioning correctly.
Have you recently updated your Xbox 360 in anyway, or have you (or anyone else) attempted some form of firmware hack or flash? If so, this is probably the cause of the e71 code on your Xbox, however, it could also be completely random. If you call microsoft they will most likely tell you to9 just reset but that is only a temporary fix and you still have the problem of annoying freezes which will get worse and worse. Fixing the Xbox e71 is quite tricky. First try these methods,
1) switch off the console. With the console switched off, press and hold the sync button (the small white button that is used to search for wireless connections). While holding the sync button, switch on the console by pressing the power button and do not release hold of the sync button until the console is fully booted up. During the booting up of the console, any failed updates will be cleared allowing the console to run normally once again and thus eliminating the xbox 360 e71 error.
Another similar way is to
2)Hold the wireless connection button on your controller down with the 360 off. It's the little white button between the shoulder buttons. It's what you used to set up your wireless controller with your 360. While still holding the button, hit the XBOX logo on the controller to turn on the XBOX. Do not let go of the white button. After it's fully started up, you can let go. this reverts you back to your last update.
Or if nothing else seems to work you could try completely resetting your Xbox 360. To do this,
3) First enter the dashboard, go to the right-most column, go and press "Initial Set Up" then follow the instructions on screen. If you cannot access this screen due to the e71 error on your Xbox 360, you can try holding the "Y" button on your controller as you switch the console on. This will enter the same process, and restore default factory settings. However, there is still a chance that this might not work.
There are guides available online for less than $30 if you cant seem to get it fixed but make sure you get one that explains all errors as most only tell about the red ring of death.
Hope this helps

I have an xbox 360 that pops up with the 3 red lights on the front and every now and then the e71 error. How do I fix this problem myself?

Sons Xbox 360 shows code E71 what does this mean or the ring of dead...?

hi E71 error code is listed as this fault
E71: Dashboard Error - Error within Xam.xex: possibly a dashboard update error, Check below in the "Console Reset Codes" for instructions. If that does not work there is no other solution and the console must be sent back to MS for repair

try using both of these reset procedures below to solve the problem, you may lose some game data so you need to bare that in mind.
if the below methods dont work then the chances are it has over heated and you will get the dreaded red ring of death.
if you look at the display where the on button is let me know how many lights you have as this is also an error code.

Clear All Installed Game Updates and Console Cache

1. Go to the "system" blade
2. Select "memory"
3. Press Y on the HD symbol
4. Press X,X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X
5. A message will appear saying: "Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?"
6. Select Yes

Clear Any Failed system updates that cause the console to error.

1. With the console off, press and hold the sync up button (the small white one)
2. While holding the sync button press the power button to turn on the console
3. Continue to hold the sync button until the Console has booted up completely.
4. During the boot process the console should clear any failed updates, allowing you to use it normally.

let me know how you get on ok
plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

Red circle 3/4 bright red says E71 or E79

both codes you gave are different, but could be same:

E71 = A possible dashboard update error, may need sent back to MS for repair.

E79 = Hard drive error.

In both cases though it could be your hard drive causing the error. Try removing your hard drive and see if that solves the problem.

My xbox 360 keeps freezing up on start up and while playing. I often get an E71 code error. I have tried clearing the memory Cache. Doesn't seem to help. What else can I do.

With the unit powered off hold down the sync button. Hit the power button and continue to hold the sync button until it boots up to dashboard. This should clear out any bad updates causing that error message.

E74 then e71 error code after updating desktop. tried hdd on another xbox and it plays ok

Hi, one code actually causes the other in this case. The e-74 is a GPU malfunction and the GPU is actually what runs the dashboard. So when you updated and got the e-74 code it caused the e-71 to come up because you were updating the dashboard. The only way to repair this problem is with an x-clamp replacement,it is a fairly inexpensive repair to have done.

My xbox got one ring with error code E79 or E71

Well, E79 and E71 are different things.

The E79 is an error code representing a Hard Drive error. It could be the HDD itself or its a connection problem with the hard drive. Try playing your 360 without it and see what happens.

E71: possibly a dashboard update error, there is no solution at present the console must be sent back to MS for repair. Try resetting your console, or Power Off, remove the HDD if you have it. Reconnect the HDD.

E 71 error on xbox 360

Sorry timehrhart you've just copied a huge section from Xbox Scene forums without mentioning the Reset codes.

Back to the question - E71 is due to a dashboard update, most new Xbox consoles get this error due to missing a patch that was available to download when the new Xbox dashboard came about.

To fix this you have to clear all game updates and clear the console cache and update your console via Xbox Live. To do this on the old dashboard layout go to the 'System' blade and then Console / on the new dashboard go to 'My Xbox' tab and then go to the far right and choose the 'System Settings' and then Console and then go to the 'Memory' section. Press Y and enter this code - X,X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X.

You will get a message asking if you want to clear your cache, press Yes and just wait for it to do it's thing and it should come back to the dashboard. Now you have to update your console via Xbox Live and hopefully it should fix the problem.

If this should fail then you have to send your Xbox back to Microsoft for it to be fixed. Microsoft have extended the warranty of any Xbox to 3 years if it has the E71 or Red Ring of Death error, so hopefully you should be covered.
