Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I need to close over 900 finder windows all at once. I was selecting approx 950 folders in the finder to transfer from one external hard drive to another and I accidentally opened all of the folders in their own windows. This crashed my computer and now I can't log into my User account because it tries to reopen all of the windows.

What if you use system restore from safe mode or another admin account to restore the system back to a previous state. You could choose the last restore point available.
You don't mention what OS you're using, but I suspect this would work...see instructions here.
Or, you could press F8 at boot and try Last known good configuration. If that doesn't work, try booting with selective services enabled and only allow basic startup services to boot. Then you could use something like this to close all the applications....

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

My computer recognizes this hard drive, but windows media player does not

With Windows Media Player open, hit the F3 key. You get an Add To Library window providing you with an option to sync folders from other sources...like an external hard drive.
Select the option to add My folders and those of others I can access. Then you click the Add button.
Now you can see the Add Folder window. Search for the folder where you stored your music on the external hard drive and select it. Then click the OK button.
This will add the selected folder on the external hard drive to the list of synced folders. Once the Add Folder window disappears, Windows Media Player starts syncing the music and adding it to it's library.

Restoring your iTunes Library backup

When you need to restore your backed up iTunes Library from your external hard drive to your computer, follow these steps:

Quit iTunes.
Locate your external hard drive.
Mac: On the Desktop or Finder sidebar.
Windows: In My Computer

Drag the iTunes folder (backed up earlier) from your external hard drive to whatever location you desire on your internal hard drive. It is recommended that you choose the default location for the iTunes folder, which is:

Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
Windows Vista or Windows 7: \Users\username\My Music\
Open iTunes while holding down the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows).

In the resulting dialog, click the Choose Library button.

Select the iTunes folder you just moved to the internal hard drive.
Click Choose.

Tip

Make a back up of your music on an external Hard Drive or Flash Drive

Copy iTunes folder to your external hard drive
To copy all the items in your iTunes library (including the iTunes Library file that holds all your playlists, playcounts, ratings, and other data) to your external hard drive, follow these steps:

Quit iTunes.
Locate your external hard drive.
Mac: On the desktop or Finder sidebar.
Windows: In My Computer
Locate your iTunes folder:
By default, the iTunes folder is located in:
Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
Windows Vista or Windows 7: \Users\username\My Music\
If the iTunes folder is not in the default location listed above then you can find where the iTunes folder is located by following these instructions:

Open your iTunes Preferences:
Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.
Click Advanced.
The location of your iTunes folder will be listed in iTunes Media folder location box, as pictured below.

Drag the iTunes folder to your external hard drive. This can take a while if you have a lot of items.

When the transfer is complete, your iTunes Library will have been successfully copied to your external hard drive.

Transferring files via external hard drive to new computer

You just need to connect the external hard drive to the new computer. Once it has connected and Windows recognizes the drive it should pop-up with the window asking what you would like to do (select the option to View Files). Also at this time open the folder on the new computer that you want to store the back-up files in. Make the external hard drive folder and the new computer folder sit side-by-side. Then while holding down the CTRL button on the keyboard click each file you want to move. When you are done selecting them - right click on any of the file selected and on the pop-up menu select "copy". Now go to the folder on the external drive and right click the mouse again and from the pop-up menu select "paste". This will just copy the file, that way you can keep the files on 2 different hard drives in case something happen to 1 of them.

Does not allow transfer of files or pictures

Plug the external hard drive into your laptop or desktop computer.

Most external hard drives do this through a cable connecting the hard drive to the USB outlet on a computer.

Plug your external hard drive into a wall outlet if it receives power from an AC adapter rather than your computer.

Click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, and open the external hard drive.

It will be located under the USB connecting drive, which is labeled with a letter ranging from "E:" to "K:".

Open the folder on your external hard drive where you would like to save the photographs.

usually in my documents my pictures or if you want to save them to a specific spot so as not get them mixed up.

Create a folder if one is not present right click in my documents select new folder and name it lets say my pics 1

Move this window to the bottom right corner of your screen to be used in future steps.

Open the folder on your home computer where the files are being stored that you wish to transfer to the external hard drive.

These may be on the desktop, in "My Documents" or elsewhere in your computer.

If you are unsure where they are located, you can always search for them by file name by going to "Start" then "Search."

Right-click on the photo file, and select "Cut."

Click on the window showing your hard drive files to bring it into use on the screen.

Right-click on the white space in the window where you would like to transfer the files, and select "Paste."

Your files have now been deleted from their original location and transferred to your external hard drive in the folder you selected

hope this helps

How to transfer my life studio from one computer to another

Connect the external hard drive to the host computer.

This connection is most commonly made with a USB-style connector.

However, eSATA connectors are becoming more prevalent in the general computing market.

Plug the external hard drive into an electrical power source.

Navigate to the external hard drive listing under the "My Computer" window.

This is opened by double-clicking the "Computer" or "My Computer" desktop icon.

Double-click the external hard drive drive icon listing and navigate to the files to be copied using the provided navigation window.

Right-click the files to be transferred and select the "Copy" heading from the context menu.

Navigate to the destination folder on the host computers hard drive using the same navigation window.

Right-click within the folder and select the "Paste" option.

This begins the process of transferring the files to the computers hard drive.

This process takes several minutes to several hours, depending on the size of the files and the speeds of the hard drives.

A progress bar will appear to keep the user informed of the process completion status.

hope this helps
