Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Focus dial shorting to the chassis.

I have a Quasar Model WP4210NW television from 1976, serial number AD6344. A few weeks ago it started making an ominous hissing sound, and I was terrified that the CRT had started leaking (terrified because it's the oldest one I own and I got it from my great-grandparents). Strangely it only hissed when it was on. So I took the back cover off, turned the tv on, and tried to pinpoint where the hissing was coming from. It wasn't the CRT leaking, but it's the Focus dial. When on, it seems to be shorting to the chassis. A beam of blue electricity shot out in the same spot in a constant manner. Meaning its always on. I loosened the screws holding the dial on, then re-tightened trying to loosen any dirt that may have gotten under them, but it only seemed to make it worse. Now there are multiple beams of blue electricity, and some of them move around a bit, occasionally creating very breif sparks.

Is it improperly grounded or the focus dial's insides shot? Is it repairable, or must I replace the component?

My friend it seems like it's about time for this set to retire there is a high voltage in a low-voltage flyback or line output transformer even if the TV is off and unplugged they can kill you if you have a voltage leak and you really want to keep this TV I would take it to a professional television repair shop they will have all the tools necessary to diagnose properly so please be careful when inside a CRT television good luck in your effort to repair the set

This is a known problem with this model. Call 800-847-9083 and give them the model and serial number to see if your unit is covered by a recall on the control board. I called a few weeks ago and they sent the part and a tech to install it for free on my 3 year old machine.
