The sensors on the side of the door either are not functioning properly or there is an obstruction in their path. So for the door to close you have to hold the button till it goes all the way down - otherwise it will reverse it and go back up - that is what is happening, right? When they are working properly in a dark area you will see one of them lite up slightly and if you put your hand in front of it to block it, the light should go out. If not working like this the control board may be fubar.

The sensors are safety features so the door won't close on someone. When you hold the wall button down it's over riding the sensors, therefore it works when you hold down the button but will not work when you tap it or use the remote. Line up the photo cells so they stop blinking. If they're blinking they think something is in the way...hence not closing. If you can't get them to line up and stop blinking one may be defective. Contact the manufacturer and see if you can purchase a replacement set. They usually aren't too expensive, maybe $20/$40.

there is an error in the system. most likely The safety beams (mounted on the track near the floor) are out of alignment and the LED light should be blinking. The garage door opener will not let the door close if the beams are misaligned. Realign them and the LEDs on the beam or on the operator will stay on. you should be able close the door now with one push.

Check your door sensors. They have probably been bumped. Tweak them until they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not blinking.

Look at the back of the opener, the LED light blinks. Count how many blinks, then go to the troubleshooting guide to find the fault.

Check the wiring going to the sensors to make sure it is not broken or disconnected. You have a problem with the sensors themselves or the logic board. Unfortunately the only way to be sure is to replace.
