The sensors on the side of the door either are not functioning properly or there is an obstruction in their path. So for the door to close you have to hold the button till it goes all the way down - otherwise it will reverse it and go back up - that is what is happening, right? When they are working properly in a dark area you will see one of them lite up slightly and if you put your hand in front of it to block it, the light should go out. If not working like this the control board may be fubar.

SOURCE: how do you bypass sensors for craftsman garage door opener

The sensors are safety features so the door won't close on someone. When you hold the wall button down it's over riding the sensors, therefore it works when you hold down the button but will not work when you tap it or use the remote. Line up the photo cells so they stop blinking. If they're blinking they think something is in the way...hence not closing. If you can't get them to line up and stop blinking one may be defective. Contact the manufacturer and see if you can purchase a replacement set. They usually aren't too expensive, maybe $20/$40.

SOURCE: Must hold wall unit to close garage door...

there is an error in the system. most likely The safety beams (mounted on the track near the floor) are out of alignment and the LED light should be blinking. The garage door opener will not let the door close if the beams are misaligned. Realign them and the LEDs on the beam or on the operator will stay on. you should be able close the door now with one push.

SOURCE: I have a craftsman garage door opener (1/2 hp) won't close proper

Check your door sensors. They have probably been bumped. Tweak them until they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not blinking.

Look at the back of the opener, the LED light blinks. Count how many blinks, then go to the troubleshooting guide to find the fault.

SOURCE: Liftmaster 971LM opens but won't close correctly

Check the wiring going to the sensors to make sure it is not broken or disconnected. You have a problem with the sensors themselves or the logic board. Unfortunately the only way to be sure is to replace.

My Chamberlain 41A5389-1B 1/2HP door opener will only close via the wall push button when it is held down until door is fully closed. Will not close with remote, when using the remote it will start to...

Have you checked the tracks on both sides? If the door closes when you hold the wall button there may be an obstruction or a bad guide. This could exert enough resistance to make it stop and reverse. Holding the wall button allows it to keep going past the problem.

My garage door opener opens with remote but will not close with remote. will open with wall button but button must be held down until door touches floor to close

Check the door sensors. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not flickering. Tweak them a bit. If you cannot get both lights to come on you have a bad sensor.

Wall mount button LED is flashing, remotes won't work, door won't close unless the wall mount button is held down until the door is fully closed

Sounds like you have a couple problems. First of all press and hold the button on the wall control that has a lock icon for 3 seconds and release. This should take care of the flashing LED and the remotes will now work. Having to hold the button on the wall control until the door is closed is usually a problem with the door sensors. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each is lit and not flickering.

SEARS/CRAFTSMAN 53628SRT Not Closing properly

sounds like the safety door sensors are at fault, also did you reprogram the remotes by pressing the smart button on the logic board, when the safety sensors are bad the door will reverse to open state.you can pully the rip cord to manualy close the door untill you solve the problem.
