Question about Intel Motherboard
I installed the driver (Realtek HD Audio) for Windows XP, and suddenly, my sound just stopped working. I haven't an idea why; perhaps I have the wrong driver? But when I plug in the cable for my speakers into the front jack - the one for headphones - the sounds starts working again. How could it be the back of the computer's jack, considering it had worked just minutes before the installation of the driver?
It has a autodetection for when jacks are plugged into the audio port. Maybe the connection isn't just perfect, or there is corrosion/debree on it causing it not to make perfect contact. If that isn't it it may be the wrong driver.

Tips for a great answer:
Update your embedded sound from Realtek to the latest AC'97 codec.
if your computer came with a motherboard disc the sound drivers could be on it
click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to sound, video and game controllers you might see a yellow question mark? Right click to reinstall drivers or you can download the drivers
