Question about Canon PowerShot A85 Digital Camera

Works only on Stitch Mode

My camera only works on stitch mode. I try to go to other modes, like auto and the only thing I see is a black screen. I turn the dial to other modes and nothing shows up. I only can view the screen when it is on the stitch mode. What can I do to solve the problem.

I have just discovered that I have exactly the same problem. The screen is blank, unless you select the stitching mode on the dial.

I was having problems since january this year (roughly 4 years after purchase). It went blank. Then several month later it came back.
Then went blank. Then worked for two month, and now it went blank again, but it is alive when is switched to stitching.

    Does anyone know the solution?

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

What to do?

Try a reset to factory default settings. If that doesn't work you can try to reinstall the camera's firmware as instructed on the Canon website.

The screen has a small picture with a covered in part to the left of the picture. Above the picture is a 2 and 1 with an arrow going from the 1 to the 2

You're in Stitch Assist (Panorama) mode. Here's your user manual directly from Canon. Page 45 and 46 explains Stitch Assist mode. Page 35 and 36 explains how to select it, and in your case, deselect it.

No display powershot a75

Did you get a solution to your problem? I am experiencing the exact same thing with my A75. Still takes pictures and displays them for the 2 second preview, then back to black. And they download fine, too. But I get the same black screen in every mode except stitch assist and movie mode. Thanks.

Lcd doesn't work

While in shooting mode, set dial to stitch and then press menu. That's the only time my screen works, and the only way I can make changes.

A85 LCD stays off in all modes except "stitch"

Hi Toonz
I have exactly the same problem as Shimoni and Antonio with my 4 years old A85.
But sorry, its not a problem of the CCD, cause we all get a clear actual picture on the LCD but just in stitch mode! In any other shooting or playback mode the LCD is dark. So the sensor must be working well and Canon Germany doesnt repair for free. Our failure is different and we have to pay much more than the camera is worth ;-((

stitch assist = panoramic view

since this is just another shooting mode on the camera and that even if you set your camera to another shooting mode, it reverts back to stitch assist, you may need to set the camera's settings back to default. here's a screenshot on how to:

LCD Monitor remains black except in stitch assist mode

Can you see the menus?? Can you see pics in "reveiw" mode? If yes, and this is only a "taking picture" issue, then the LCD is good. You probably have a bad CCD. Canon USA will repair this for free. Go here for details. They will send you 2 emails. One with the UPS label and another with info sheets to be sent with the defective camera
