Before you toss the drive in the garbage....

Had similiar problems in the past, all have been solved this way:

If the disc won't "play" it could be that the lens of the drive is dirty or smudged, and thus, the computer cannot "recognize" the disk (it will spin, but never "catch". Eject the drive, and look at the lens and tray from an angle... if you see a build-up of dust, try using a soft lint-free cloth with a slight amount of rubbing alcohol to lift away (very GENTLY) any accumulation of dust from the area around the lens. Some will say to get a compressed-gas can and blow away the dust, but I've found that it will simply blow dirt further into the drive-slot itself, and the problem never really goes away. When it comes to the lens, use a seperate CLEAN Q-TIP with rubbing alcohol and gently rotate the q-tip in the opposite direction you are "wiping" (helps to lift the smudge without having to "scrub".

Let air dry, examine once more for dirt/grime, and let 'er rip! Also, check the disk itself for smudges... remember, CD's/DVD's are optical and not magnetic... the cleaner the lens and disk are, the better!!

Hope it helps!

Check the data connector on the rear of the drive. If this doesn't work you may need a new drive, they are cheap and readily available.

How to play movie

first thing you may want to check is to see if your disks play automatically. go to settings>system settings>disc auto start (its about mid way down). make sure that is marked "ON" If its not just press "X" on disc auto start and you should have option to turn it "OFF" and "ON". with that set every time you put in a disc it should auto start.
if that doesn't start automatically the title of your BD should be under VIDEO and it should be the one on the bottom. if it doesn't show up there you should check to make sure the disk is able to be read. try it with another DVD/BD if those show up and your first disk don't than you know you have a faulty disk. hope this helps

I put in a blu ray disc but it is not playing in any media player and the disc drives do not recognise that a disc has been entered

Unless the drive in your laptop is a blu-ray drive, it won't recognize a blu-ray disc. A blu-ray drive can recognize and play a regular DVD, but it doesn't work the other way around.

If your computer is indeed fitted with a blu-ray drive, the laser lens may need cleaning. On a laptop, you usually have clear access to the lens with the tray open, so you can try cleaning it with a cotton swab moistened with lens cleaner. Or the disc itself may have a problem. Try another disc and see if the trouble continues.

If the computer doesn't have a blu-ray drive and you will frequently want to play blu-ray discs, get a USB external blu-ray drive. It's easier to find one of those than to locate a suitable blu-ray replacement drive for a laptop. There are many variations of drives used in laptops, but an external drive will always be compatible. And you'll be able to use it with other computers not blu-ray equipped.

Cannot get my dvd cd rom to play dvds or cds tried everything apart from taking the tower off model #a1310n Prod# el448aa-aba

If you cannot hear the disk spinning when you put the cd or DVD in you may have a broken CD/DVD drive, easily and cheaply replaceable for under $20 at any store (Recommended: Best Buy). Try putting your Windows Disc into the drive to see if it is only a problem with playing Media, or if it is a problem with the drive itself and go from there. Good luck!

Sony DVD-RW DW-D56A drive playing up

I am not posting a solution, but may be the same problem.
I have dell inspiron 510m with DVD - RW sony A 56
It had burnt one DVD till now, but it can NOT burn any more DVDs.
I have tried burning using windows XP-SP2, Nero 6, Nero 8, burn my files 3.01 BUT no use. The only thing I got is different error messages.
I changed many types of DVD-Rom, from sony, benq..trying to rule out the storge media itself as source of error, but again no use.
Astonishingly, it works a CD-ROM Burner very well.
Any suggestions?
