Rinnai Tankless Water Heater

To whom it may concern,

I bought a Rinnai Tankless Water Heater 2 yrs ago. Last winter we ran out of propane, we got propane, afterwards the when you are taking showers the hot water heaters turns off ( completely ) and on during the shower. We can no longer adjust the temp. Sometimes if we turn the heater off and on during the shower it will fix the problem and stay running. In the summer no problems, it has started again. What can I do? Please Help!

Question, is there any other equipment that uses propane? You indicate that the problem started after a delivery of propane after running out. If so, I suspect a blockage in either the gas train or the rinnai itself. If tou have the temperature control that regulates the water temperature, you can recall error codes to pinpoint the issue. They are optional equipment so if you can wire one in or ask your propane gas supplier if their service department has one, it will aide in the diagnosis.

Controller not working

The rinnai is a computer that heats water. It is not ordinary water heater most people are familiar with, and repairs are not do-it-yourself, requiring a trained technician qualified in that brand who can diagnose both computer and water heater problems and plumbing problems.
Call rinnai for recommended local technician. Click on support tab. Note their webpage is very short on repair details, unlike companies that sell tank-type heaters... because tankless units are not do-it-yourself.

Problem might be simple blown glass fuse on circuit board or complete failure of computer and sensors.
Here is page written for Rheem tankless, that explains general complexity of tankless computers, and showing required maintenance, such as deliming each year:

To save problems with tankless computers plus anticipated expense of maintenance and repairs, I recommend homeowner install tank-type gas water heater:

Also install one-time-use whole house surge protector, and install grounding rods to prevent further damage... lightning frequently likes the same places over and again:

Bought a Rinnai Tankless water heater, propane hookup is 3/4 inch and our gas line where the water heater goes is 1/2 inch. also the regulator from the propane tank is for a lower flo gas flo, for our...

Sure is. You simply need to purchase a to 3/4" to 1/2" Male to female reducer. You didn't mention if your current gas piping is flexible copper, rigid black iron pipe or flexible stainless steel. In any event, get the one that matches your current gas piping. If all of your other gas appliances require an individual regulator, then you'll need one for the tankless water heater. If in doubt, contact your propane provider.

Hope this helped answer your question and provide a solution.

Takes too long for hot water.

You need a recirculating line. You will have to hire a plumber to run a water line from the farthest fixture or to the fixture you are concerned about on the hot side and return it back to the water heater. this will cause hot water to constantly run throught the hot water line (via the recirculating line) and when you want to draw water from the fixture, you will already have hot water right at the line.
I know this works with standard tank water heaters, but it is a lil trickier with rinnai units(but very possible) if your plumber pleads the 5th and tries to sell you another unit call the Rinnai manufacturerand ask them how.
