No just the laptop charger needs to be plugged in.

Frequent Charging Shortens Battery Life Frequent charging shortens the life span of a Lithium ion battery. Batteries should be charged only after they expend all their power. b> Switching Batteries Switching batteries helps preserve battery life: If a cell phone or computer user puts in a spare battery while separately charging the primary Lithium ion battery, that helps extend the life of both batteries. b> Removing Batteries Most laptops charge the battery when a user plugs in the AC adapter. Users can adjust this setting by changing the power options. Windows places this option in the Control Panel, while the Gnome Linux desktop places power options under "Administrative Tools". Cell phones incorporate their own power-saving features that the user usually cannot control. b> When to Replace a Lithium Ion Battery If a laptop battery does not hold a charge for more than a few minutes, a user must replace the Lithium ion battery if he wants to use the computer without an AC adapter. b> Other Ways to Extend Battery Life Storing a battery in a cool, dry environment causes a lithium-ion battery to last a little longer and reduces the frequency of needed battery replacements. How can I increase my laptop battery life?

To increase the battery operating timeline you can do a number of things. These usually include dimming the screen, adjusting the power setting to turn the screen off after 10 minutes and stop the hard drive from spinning when idle after a period of time too.

Results will vary from laptop to laptop and depends if the quoted 6 hours 30 minutes time frame is an actual recorded time of usage off ac or based on windows assumption and estimation.

Windows power management can only tell you the time in which battery power is maintainable for based on the consumption rate at the time. With this being said start up and playing games will utilise more power that say word processing after the initial startup has cooled down.

Some laptops can be operated without the battery however there are an increasing number of laptops these days being manufactured without this option. You can attempt to operate it without the battery and doing so will not damage the laptop in any way. If anything it will maintain the life expectancy of the battery.

My 18 month toshiba satellite lap top battery is not taking a charge.

I had a similar problem with a Toshiba laptop. Problem was an issue with the bios being out of date. Go to the Toshiba website, download the bios for your model and install per Toshiba's instruction. That should fix the problem.

My cousin gave me his old Dell Lattitude C840. I found when I tried to run it without plugging it in to an outlet, the power only lasts 1 hr 15 min! Is that normal for this model? Is there a solution so I...

Hello,

Yes, it is normal for this model. 1hr 15min is usually the normal duration that the model of this type of battery lasts. This highest it might go is 1hr 30mins. It's usually difficult for laptop of these kinds to stay 2hrs or more using battery.

There is no solution to this. You have no choice than to continue using it that way.

You are even lucky because some don't even last up to 1hr.

I hope I have answered your question.

Yours sincerely.

Hi,
Laptop battery notification is not accurate but approximate. The remaining battery usage is calculated approximately and then notified to the user. If your battery's life is more than a year, then the calculation goes on decreasing. It cannot be rectified unless you go for a new battery. But still you can tweak the battery life by,
1. Switch of the wireless adaptor when not in use.
2. Decrease the screen brightness.
3. Configure your power plan in control panel to minimal power usage mode while on battery.
4. The notification limit for battery low can be custom configured in the control panel. set it to 30 % and this will prevent your laptop to dye without power as your battery power drains faster below 31%
I hope this is helpful to understand the logic behind this.

Inspiron runs on ac power but not battery

Sounds like you have a faulty ac adapter or jack on the laptop and its not charging the battery fully. More like a trickle charge. I would recommend leaving the laptop on default power settings or the best power settings and see if their is a differance in life or either shutdown the laptop and let it charge until the light shows fully charged.

Compaq Presario v2000 notebook reduced battery life

you may try:
1) check the battery alarm at windows power managment, to set 5-10% alarm level.
2) discharge the battery to the empty then charge longer time, you need monitoring how long it charged (see charge lights change), need to change new one if charging time much less then before(less then 10-20 minutes)..
3) plug-in AC adapter monitoring charging current,
this step you need a current meter to make a series connection in the circuite, the battery is over life cycle if the current less then 500mA.
