I had the same problem and had to clean the black ink head. Check out these instructions:

The following may work: remove all the ink supplies. Remove the printhead and soak it for about 5 minutes in 0.5" of very hot water. Gently blot the printhead on a soft damp paper towel to remove the excess water, then replace in the printer and then reinstall the ink supplies.

Well since I felt I had nothing to loose, I decided to try a manual forced cleaning. What I did was use a hypodermic needle and some cleaning fluid. I removed the black cartridge exposing a nipple/tube in the bottom of the printer cartridge stall. I inserted the hypo needle into the exposed printer nipple and blasted about 15 cc's of the cleaner fluid down the tube. I then put the cartridge back in, ran a cleaning process twice, and printed a test sheet. Low and behold I saw "some" black ink traces. I repeated this process five times. Each time the black test pattern showed more and more black improvement. It never came out perfect, but good enough. I was afraid of flooding the printer with too much cleaning solution so I quit after five. By the way, the cleaning solution (smells like alcohol) often comes free with an order of ink from places link abcink.com or clickinks.com.

Yes your are right:
Stay away from older brother printers due to an developer mistake in the construction.
Better buy the latest modells with LC51 cartridges. Brother had learned their lesson, too and did a very good job with those new printers!!!
Give the old mfc3240 away to eBay for example.

Black or Color START. Check all the colors including the black & check if
there are any missing dots and if there are any colors not printing correctly.
2. Press the Ink Management button on the control panel and select
cleaning press ok
3. Press the up or down arrow key to select Color press ok and press
*After the cleaning process the printer will ask you if the quality is
OK, press up or down to select yes or no, and it will ask you whether black or
color is ok, once you have selected you're answer press Black or Color START to
print another test page. Compare the 1st and 2nd test page if it's
improving, you may need to do this 3-5 times or until you get a better quality
Hope this helps.
