Question about Western Digital Raptor® WD1500ADFD 150 GB SATA Hard Drive

WD Sata drive was working perfectly then during the night

Drive was working perfectly then during the night something happened as I woke to here a faint ticking noise. so I rebooted the PC no I cannot see the drive in bios. I have since loaded xp onto another WD sata drive and tried to see if I could access the original drive but still it doesnt show up on Bios or XP it spins but nothing happens. I have tried changing cables etc even downloaded the WD diagnostic tool which comes up with unknown error 120. do you have any ideas how I could get my info off the drive considering I cannot get my system to see it now before I send it back to WD for a RMA. I have no idea what happened over night but no updates or anything were downloaded. Oh and I have also checked the PCB for burn marks etc but there is nothing. Also the second WD sata drive was also installed and running in the PCX as I used it to store movies and pictures etc. your help would be greatly appreciated as I cannot afford to pay for data recovery pricing.

As you hear a tickling sound, I am pretty sure the HDD has gone faulty. Only way to see whether you can recover the data by your self is to fix the HDD into a external SATA enclosure and see whether it works and detected by the PC.

Otherwise the only option is to go to data recovery specialists who are normally very expensive.
It is worth contacting a local computer shop first.

All the best!

I cannot configure a SATA RAID 1 to mirror two WD HDD 1 TB

You sure you installed the ASUS RAID drivers when you installed Windows? Ya need to get the drivers off the ASUS disk, transfer them to a floppy, hit F6 when windows tells you to (during windows only have a second or 2 to see the message!)) and use the floppy to install them. Might take a few tries to get it right.

WD Passport drive unmounts itself when connected

look up how to remove the drive from the enclosure on you-tube
it is easy and safe.
one of the removal videos also shows how to remove the USB-SATA adabter (it is really a sata drive). The removal is easy.. just pull it off.
You then have SATA ports.. just plug the drive into your computer through a SATA port and then you can access your data.
It is most likely the USB adapter that is broken (they break easily).
IDK if you can find a new one.

HDD Installation

Hi gravni,
The bios (MUST see the drive). If the bios does not see the drive neither will windows!
The down below port (as you mentioned) is for IDE devices. IDE1 by name. Use your ATA IDE port for the slower IDE drives or cd-rom drives. (This board does not have a second IDE port).
If the WD drive is a SATA drive connect it to the SATA 2 port. See your manual. Go to page 1-4.
As show in this pic below.

It's suggested when adding a new drive into a working system, the user should setup the drive by using the manufactures guide. Click on this link & download WD's pdf file:
You mentioned the drive is hot. This only means it is running.
Include in this post the model number of your WD drive? So I can check the specs.

you need to install the drivers for it when loading windows,,
you are on the right track by pressing F6 however you need to have the FLOPPY DISK that came with your mainboard in the floppy drive..

If you dont have the diskette then ,, the drivers are located on the mainboard cd,, its in the sata / raid folder, there should be a text document in there with the insttructions on creating a floppy with the driver files you will need.
