If the button release for the gas tank door on your 2001 Jetta is not working, there is an emergency release cable located inside the trunk that can be used to open the gas tank door. Here are the steps to access and use the emergency release cable:
Open the trunk and locate the side panel on the same side as the gas tank door.
Carefully pry off the side panel to access the inside of the trunk.
Locate the emergency release cable, which is usually a bright orange or yellow cable attached to the gas tank door mechanism.
Pull the emergency release cable to open the gas tank door. If the cable is difficult to reach, you may need to use pliers or another tool to grasp and pull it.
Once the gas tank door is open, you may need to inspect the gas cap and latch mechanism to determine if they are damaged or malfunctioning and need to be repaired or replaced.
When the motor stops in the down position, pull the emergency release handle. Push the door fully closed by hand then engage the emergency handle. Open the door with the remote and then close it with the remote to make sure the door closes completely.

under the top cover and can be accessed through the dispenser bezel. Disconnect power to the machine before accessing the cord.
Open the dispenser cover and remove the four screws securing the
dispenser bezel to the top cover then lift the bezel off to access the emergency
access cord. Pull the emergency access cord carefully and steadily then open
the door.
