as win xp is no longer supported by microsoft it is very possible that the updates are not being recognized by win xp and you now have confloicts in the os.
if it works fine in win 7 , then it is time to remove win xp and upgrade to win 7
There is an AVG remover tool. There have been some problems like you described. The remover works in safe mode
go to the website http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools hopefully you have a second computer or have a friend who will download it for you.
Download the file
copy it onto a jump drive
run it on the computer with problems
reboot and see if that clears it up for you.

open services.msc from run window and then find avgwdsvc.exe. right click and select properties then check the disabled checkbox. Apply and get out of services.msc. now try to install the new version of avg.
Strippy had asked you a right question. You may be trying to install AVG when you have already one antivirus program running. OR you had once installed AVG sometimes in the past, but uninstallation was not properly done. Hence it is showing registry key error.
1. If you are running any anitvirus prog now, first uninstall it. Then restart the machine.
2. Now you try install AVG. it should install. if not, try the following
Go to system restore and create restore point for safety.
go to run and type regedit and then enter
Press cntrl + F for finding earlier registry keys of AVG. Try to find out all old registry keys amd delete them all.
Your linksys wireless router has a built in firewall into it. You should enable that firewall and deactivate the AVG. Your computer will run faster as well.
