Ok, try getting a program called SpeedUpMyPC 2009 with a serial. Or you can just try the trial and Go to the tab "Optimization" and then Memory. After that, you will see "Clean RAM" button, click it and your ram should cldear at least 100MB. Note - This might slow the computer for a couple of seconds/ 2 minutes.
Tell me if it works.
Thanks, Yuri.

I want a dual core processor upgrade

You listed this under PC Laptop? It's a Desktop? Have you ever done a CPU upgrade? You are limited to what will work with your machine, Mobo and other components. Your Mobo is, of course, AMD compatible, so if you read the specs: http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/desktop/0000/Acer/AspireX1200/AspireX1200sp2.shtml The AMD Athlon X2 dual-core is best option. Memory is a easy option to increase speed a bit. Remember, with a 32bit OS the most memory it can use is 3.80 GB's More or Less. With a 64bit OS use more. I have done many CPU upgrades, you may not get the Speed/ processing increase you expect. After all, the components work in conjunction with one another. Do your research on Socket type, Pins, Power requirments, etc., etc.Check, Verify, then re-Check and re-Verify. Use this little freeware program to assist you, it list Spec info in detail, SPECCY at: http://www.filehippo.com/download_speccy/.

2 GB DDR2 on Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H Motherboard

Hello

That's normal condition. Probably your RAM shares it's capacity with internal video card (which uses the whole 256MB)

More info can be found on Wikipedia:

More Ram for graphics

You can share the RAM for VGA max of 256 only for some motherboards. On BIOS select the AUTO instead of selecting 128MB share memory.
