Strange convergence problem on my Philips projection TV

I just bought a projection TV from someone who was moving and who said it was working. The problem looks like the common convergence problem that everyone talks about. (It looks like it's 3D but without the glasses.) However there is a big catch. The convergence is off only in 1080i, not in 480p.

It's perfect in 480p.

Nobody has ever mentioned, in regards to convergence problems in a Philips, that it only happens in one resolution (1080i) and not in 480p. In fact it appears that the convergence circuit is common in all resolutions. So how can that happen? If there were two convergence circuits, one for 1080i and another for 480p then I wouldn't be bothering with this posting but it appears that the same circuit is used at both resolutions.

Any ideas about what is going on with my tv? I'd be most grateful and happy if anyone could clear this up.

An update: To clarify things a photo of the TV in 480p can be viewed here:http://myincarnations.com/images/pic1.jp... and here it is in 1080ihttp://myincarnations.com/images/pic2.jp... .

As you can see in 1080i the guns are converged only in the very center. From the center out in all directions it gets progressively worse and worse. (This should mean something to someone.) I am on disability and have more time than money so I am hoping someone can tell me what is wrong with this dang tv set.

I found out that during the move the convergence went out completely in 1080i. I am thinking that the convergence is stored in CMOS. CMOS needs a voltage charge to hold it's memory. Being unplugged for a week must have zeroed things out and completely erased all the 1080i convergence information.

I just did a complete 1080i convergence and it works perfectly now.

    Thanks all

The only real test is to try to adjust the convergence for each color...Red and Blue...If you cant move both colors in all directions - up - down - left - right...then your Tv has a convergence problem. Try in both 480 and 1080...if it can't be adjusted - replace the parts. I just did mine the other day

Here's what Philips FAQ says about your convergence procedure:
Question How do I adjust convergence (align colors)? Answer Note: For best results, the Projection TV needs to be turned on for 15 minutes or longer before adjusting the picture tubes (convergence).

Press the INTELLISENSE button on the remote (under the flap). During the convergence process DO NOT press the INTELLISENSE button again and DO NOT move the Projection TV.

So, I think you're going to need to order a replacement remote.

I have a philips projection tv, there is a green hald circle at the bottom of the screen also the picture has double images and very yellow and red. I just bought this from someone who keeps telling me its...

It sounds like multiple problems. First of all these sets are famous for bad coolant between the tubes and lenses causing the picture to be degraded causing the foggy picture. The fluid can be changed to clear up the halo's. The double images are convergence issues. Most likely both convergence amps need to be replaced. I hate to say it but it sounds like you got a money pit. Good luck. Thanks for using fixya.

Intermittently screen move to one side with distrited picture

Might be the convergence chips. Do you have any problem moving the convergence under the menu setting? Convergence chips are reasonably priced. If you know a friend or someone who can solder better than average, I would go this route. My tv wasn't that bad; I wasn't able to set 2 of the 3 colors during convergence setup. Changing the 2 convergence chips did the trick!

We moved out toshiba rear projection tv and now it looks like a double picture and i cant figure out how to do a converging we cleaned every thing this tv had been working very well any ideas

The position(s) of one or more of the CRTs has shifted during the move. You may need mechanical alignment to bring it close enough for the convergence to be within range.

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Magnavox rear projection

If the red converge will not line up, then there the convergence chips are actually bad - the repair will cost around $700 if you go through a Magnavox authorized service center. I would look at posts by Slinteriors in the Philips or Magnavox rear projection sections - he has some ideas on generic chips that might be had for cheaper.
