Doug there is an incompatibility with this printer and Vista. IF HP are sending you an updated driver you need to uninstall the printer and reinstall and then substituting the driver. Yopu can do this easier if you unzip the new driver to a location say Desktop go into device manager select the printer and update driver.. pointing to the loaction on the desktop. it should work if HP are sending you their updated Vista driver.

I have a Lexmark 5200 printer. Worked fine with

There is a conflict with the Lexmark printer control program from XP with Vista. either download and install the new program from Lexmark or try running the device in compatabiltity mode. The Lexmark XP drivers will not work with Vista and they posted updates to most of thier application software on thier website.

I need a clean installation of Vista

If I understand this correctly, If you are using the system restore, it will maintain the last operating system install. When you went from XP to Vista, XP is totally gone. So your only option the will arraise it to restore system and if successful should be just fine.(I know that you mentioned it didn't work) you may have to do a total reinstall with Vista. If you can locate the disc.
Now the part that is left in a particitlon is as you thought...XP unless you formatted the whole drive what you installed VIstA in which case you will have nothing.
As long as you have a COA sticker on your computer you can borrow a disk from someone who has dell, and call the microsoft number and explain that you reformatted and use another copy to put it in and they will get you through the activation. Use the numbers on your sticker.
Good luck please leave rating.; thank you

Dual boot

Hi abc_19 ,

Before I answer your question , let me tell you that you need to back up your data. Also, make sure that your system hardware supports Vista.

You also need to have genuine windows XP and windows Vista disks handy with you.

1. Partition your hard drive. In Windows XP, using the $50 PartitionMagic or (according to one of our readers) the free GParted Live CD, create a new "primary" partition to install Vista on. Make it at least 20 gigabytes in size.
2. Install Vista on the new partition. Pop in the Vista CD and point it to your newly-created partition as the installation destination. Installation will restart your machine at various points.
3. Choose your operating system on boot. Once Vista is installed on your newly-created partition, on boot up, you'll get a choice to start XP or Vista. The default is Vista. However, this can be changed using Vista's boot manager.
When you're up and running with Windows Vista, be sure to check our our Vista upgrade power tips.
The original article appears below for posterity, and it's still got relevant screenshots and other info for those of you looking to dual-boot XP and Vista.
