Question about Boating

1 Answer

I have a 1979 115 HP Evinrude and it run rough. I took out a spark plug and it had a milky film on it. Took out the other plugs and they were oily. Could this be a head gasket or a cracked cylinder? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would bet on a head gasket. Sorry about your luck.

I have a 94 dodge carvan i change spark plugs and took off the intake cover and now it runs rough

  • With engine running listen for a whistle indicating a vacuum hose leak. It is easy for a vacuum hose to pull loose while removing replacing plugs.
  • Check for spark-plug leads . You can check at night and look for spark.
  • Remove and check each spark plug. The ceramic tops are easy to crack.
  • Check the spark gap, hitting or picking up residue on the tip is common.

I changed the spark plugs on my holden captiva took for test run. Now its idling rough when stationery.

Hi,if it was running fine before you put the spark plugs in just take them back out and with a feeler gage check the clearence of the spark plug it should then run ok.
(when the spark plug makes its jerny it gets thrown arrond a bit so always check the clearances, all the best.

,y 84 nissan 30zx 2+2 is overheating.water pump works took thermostat out completely. there was no leaks in any hoses is this ok

Was the thermostat bad. To check it,put it in pot of water and boil on stove and see if it opens at 180 degrees,if it doesn't then it's bad.Are you sure water pump is circulating, doesn't have to leak to be bad.Is your radiator flowing good, not clogged and do you have a blown head gasket, check oil to see if it is milky. Is white smoke coming out of exhaust pipe. Also how does your spark plugs look like, not oily,I hope.

If you have oil on the plug but not actually in the cylinder, the tube seal for the valve cover could be leaking.

Which spark plugs go in to a 1980 70hp evinrude

The original plug in that motor was a Champion L-76V. The BUHW is an exact cross reference.

I have a 1970 evinrude 115 hp outboard. which when I first got it, had not been run for about 8 years. I removed the plugs, oiled the cylinders, and made sure I could turn it over by hand before I cranked...

A couple other things to check... Is the stator still good? This provides the electric current to provide spark to the plugs. The magnets under the flywheel also need to be in good shape. Sound sliek these havent been checked as yet. If they are good, the next thing I would check is the actual spark plug wires themselves. These can degrade and require replacement as well. Just take it bit by bit and hopefully you will find the problem, but those are the two things I would check next because it appears you have replaced just about everything else!

Good Luck

Oily spark plug, changed plugs now car smokes

You changed 6 coils, but you didn't change spark plugs? The new coils give strong spark to burn off resisdues from your old plugs plus what ever left inside the combustion due to bad old coils causing smoke and bad ordor. Change all new spark plugs so you can have good ignition to burn off all junks inside combustion chambers. Smokes are at the beginning, but it will go away after less than 10 minutes.
If it is not going away you may have other problemS:
Rich mixture causing engine check light come on.
Check if engine oil level.
Check if your coolant level.
Open the oil cap to see if you have milky stuff. If there is milky stuff then you have bad head gasket.
Let me know what is coming out so others can learn from your experience. Good luck.

No it has not been overheating or losing coolant at all it just has been running rough and poorly (loud) it was not smoking till he took out the old spark plug and put in the new one he said it was smoking out all that had been backed up into the cylinder due to non working spark plugs (there was oil on the spark plug)
