Hello williamhowar:
>>As I am Sure you are Aware, Most Backhoes do a Lot of Bouncing and Jarring. LOL.
>>If you can Trace the Harness, then Check of a Bare Wire that is May be Touching the Unit.
>>If the Harness is Good, then I will Require some More Information about this Unit in Order to Assist you Further.
>>Send me the Model Numbers Off the Unit, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you.
Thanks.

It could be that the belt jumped off the pulleys and got caught between a pulley and a belt guide,or the trans-axel seized up ,or brake was stuck while in a high gear, and burned up the belt. most likely the first reason. if it wasn't for the burning rubber smell,I would also look for a broken clutch/brake return spring .The pedal would stay down with a broken spring

Look under your seat and see if you have the grey cloth holding a metal plate that trips your seat switch. If so contact your John Deere dealer because this setup has been a major problem for a while. For testing purposes only I would jump your seat switch and see if that points you in the right direction, remember that using youre machine with any saftey device tripped/jumped is a hazard.

There is a switch in the seat to make sure the mower automatically stops if the brake is released and nobody is in the seat.
It appears that your safety switch (in the seat) is not activating. You can either replace the seat (about $40) or permanently connect the two wires comming out from under the seat (probably encased in a black plastic conduit). You can connect them for a test but you should fix it so you don't disable the seat safety (it could be dangerous).
It will not be a problem if it is permanently connected, it will not draw current from the battery, it is just a sensor running when the mower is turned on.
Good luck, I hope it works.
